Malignant Cookies?
« on: November 22, 2002, 02:56:42 PM »
WTF is up with these cookies?

If I choose to block them w/o disconnecting from the net I get a BSOD and have to restart my PC.

Looks like a standard cookie used for saving persistent data so they know who you are.

Could be wrong though - is that all there is to it?

Err the doman and site stuff looks weird. Sort of like in C++ when you have a char* and forget to set  the stop character '\0'. Might be what's causing the crashes.

Yeah, it's only the cookies with the weird domain/site characters that cause a BSOD.

My bet is that these are Chinese characters badly encoded. Gotta pick yer porn on the good sides weazel :D

PS: a cookie is just stored info on a txt file,it can't hurt you, nor can it "launch" anything on your system without your consent. (as far as I know)

Came from a link off this UBB.

I don't eat cookies,  I view it as an invasion of privacy.

with IE 6+ there is a button that you can delete cookies easier than manually going to the "temp" folder......

i allow all cookies then delete them after every session....

oh well my 2¢
I don't know what to put here yet.

You just *think* your deleting cookies/temp files when you use the IE control panel, the only way to remove them is by booting into DOS mode and deleting the dat files.

MS sucks for air.

well i have gone into "temp" in dos prompt and no files there after ..... even chked hidden flies.

+ there is no REAL  DOS in winXP or 2000 ..... all you have to do is goto the folder and look for any files

But I build, repair, and troubleshoot PCs for a living.

I know a lot of things that you aren't going to learn until you do the same.

Maybe you should "shut up" until you get your cherry popped in the real world?

Let me ask you a simple question to *test* the quality of your MS education:

At what size does the IE dat file become a potential problem?

Anything over 512 kb causes your browser and OS to measurably slow down and also has been shown to increase the incidence of fatal exceptions/BSOD.

You can clear the dat file by changing the location temporary internet files are stored, after the forced reboot Windoze will rebuild the dat file in the new location.

The original file size is only 34 bytes.

The reason why JB isn't having any luck finding it is he's looking in the wrong location, with WIN9X it's in C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files or under DOS C:\Windows\Tempor~1.

2000, and XP are in the \Users\My Documents tree IIRC, I avoid both of these OS like the plague as they are too full of MS bloatware/spyware.
