thats the wrong gear on that airframe - just for display purposes.

It is a Polikarpov 1-17, not many were used during the war, it carried a 20mm and 2 mgs, and was powered by Klimov M.100 860 hp 12 cylinder.  Top speed was 305 mph.

Da, comrade - - i was reading about it last night and apparently when it was introduced the VVS considered it unneccesarily fast and as a result, not a good dogfighter - some were used in the early years of the war, but not after 1941 - possibly against the Finns? did the Estonians, Latvians or Lithuanians put up a fight?

the big guy is the Sukhoi ANT-25RD that was used for a flight over the pole to Vancouver in 1937 (not much of a challenge, as Woczek Yerelzelski was quite young back then)
