There used to be places in South Chicago I knew that you could buy a real one of those for under $500......

Whoever the idiot is that bought that needs to be flogged. You can get a real one as was mentioned for around $500 if you start looking in the right places. Hell I can go pick up an AK-47 or AK-74 for less than $300 right here in town. It may not be legal but it can be in my hands in a little while.

Maybe... but to say it was deserved here is an understatement.

The BAR was a revolutionary rifle at the time.  Its ranked in the top 10 as most revolutionary/impacting guns of all time.  Anyone that buys this non-firing version would most likely be very familiar with that history and be more than willing to tell anyone that asked about it.  I seriously doubt the individual bought the weapon to "scare people" with.
