What resolution are you guys playing at?
« on: November 27, 2002, 08:49:13 AM »
Hi all,

I am currently playing AH at 1024X768 resolution, but damn planes and such seem soooo nsmall to me, even when close.  Why is that?  The proportion of percieved size as opposed to distance seems all wrong to me. Is it just me?

What screen resolutrion do you play in.  Are there advantages to one resolution over another?  Besides Frame Rate?

Thanks,

RINGER

I play at the Max resolution. Makes things smaller unless you get a bigger monitor. Crisper IMHO.:D

It's nearly impossible to really portray far distances through sie on a computer.  For that matter, it's hard to perceive far distances IRL.  I agree that it can be confusing (I play at 1024x768 as well) but that's really what icons are for.  If out of icon range you probably need not worry about it unless it's a little bigger than a "dot" or if it seems to be moving significantly.

1600x1200

Things close (not more than very few k yards away) are visible a lot better than on slower resolutions.

Things further away, aka dots, are harder to see. Seems like dots are the same amount of pixels, thus smaller at higher resolutions. But maybe they're just visible earlier (extremely small dots) so they're easier to see when they are visible on smaller resolutions.

For close range (few k) viewing it's great, anything else is visible easier on dar regardless of the resolution.

1024*768

gotta make sure you have a MINIMUM of a 17 inch monitor (with recall off)
thats the best res before it gets to small (for me anyway)

1600x1200
It's nice being able to ID planes beyond icon range.

I have a PII 400 MHZ 7.65GB Hard Drive Dell computer with a 32MB GeForce 2 Video Card and I play the game at 1024 x 768 and average frame rate is low 30's on a 15" monitor.

1200x768 32bit on a 17"
For some reason 1600x1200 shows only partial enlarged picture with updated radeon8500(64MB)/256MB/AMD1600+XP, but screenshots show full view, monitor adjusting having no effect.

1280*1024 here 20" monitor

I think the isue of the size of the other planes is probably related to the field of view you have in the non zoomed mode. You have a wider field of view than you would get in real life which makes the planes seen smaller than they would normally appear, (Bit like a rear view mirror in a car - "Objects may be closer than they appear" etc).

If you had the field of view you have in AH you probably wouldn't pass the medical required for a pilot license...
