Can you non believers in God tell me if you celebrate Thanksgiving?

I know you sneak in Christmas & Easter, just wondering about this spiritual holiday too?

Have a Happy Thanksgiving - and Give Thanks

why should you have to be thankful to god to be thankful? taking time to appreciate your fortune doesn't require religion, it's a useful exercise in humility.

you guys really would be running around pulling your hair out and going chaotic without your blankee wouldn't you- lol perhaps it's best that religion is here for a certain segment of our society.

OIC. If people are not religious, they should be working Thursday?

dh

(oh, and btw, I'd imagine Christians in other countries don't celebrate Thanksgiving either as it is a purely American holiday. You might want to engage your brain before posting)

1624, that year, William Bradford, the governor of the Plymouth Colony, proclaimed a day of thanksgiving that was really a day of fasting and prayer.

carry on :)

It wasn't until the Pilgrims invited those heathens.

The First Thanksgiving Proclamation
June 20, 1676

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unamimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving. That proclamation is reproduced here in the same language and spelling as the original.

While the proclamation quoted on this page is the oldest extant thanksgiving proclamation, the thanksgiving being announced was by no means the first thanksgiving. The Plymouth Thanksgiving traditionally regarded as the first thanksgiving took place in 1621, the fall after the Mayflower pilgrims arrived. (Thanks to Jennie Stearns for this additional information)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Holy God having by a long and Continual Series of his Afflictive dispensations in and by the present Warr with the Heathen Natives of this land, written and brought to pass bitter things against his own Covenant people in this wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst of his judgements he hath remembered mercy, having remembered his Footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for our sins, with many singular Intimations of his Fatherly Compassion, and regard; reserving many of our Towns from Desolation Threatened, and attempted by the Enemy, and giving us especially of late with many of our Confederates many signal Advantages against them, without such Disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been sensible of, if it be the Lord's mercy that we are not consumed, It certainly bespeaks our positive Thankfulness, when our Enemies are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the Lord should take notice under so many Intimations of his returning mercy, we should be found an Insensible people, as not standing before Him with Thanksgiving, as well as lading him with our Complaints in the time of pressing Afflictions:

The Council has thought meet to appoint and set apart the 29th day of this instant June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his Goodness and Favour, many Particulars of which mercy might be Instanced, but we doubt not those who are sensible of God's Afflictions, have been as diligent to espy him returning to us; and that the Lord may behold us as a People offering Praise and thereby glorifying Him; the Council doth commend it to the Respective Ministers, Elders and people of this Jurisdiction; Solemnly and seriously to keep the same Beseeching that being perswaded by the mercies of God we may all, even this whole people offer up our bodies and soulds as a living and acceptable Service unto God by Jesus Christ."

sorry, whole bunch of God stuff in there too :)

As to it being a secular Holiday....

Lincoln's Proclamation 1863:

Quote
I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings,

the puritans were in plymouth because they were fleeing the persecution of other christians, so really it should only be a puritan holiday --- anyone know if there are any puritans still out there? are you a puritan Eagler?...i'd be a lot happier if our secular government didn't give it's millions of workers a freebie day off on xmas at my expense

well then maybe a few million of us should just save our money this year if we're not invited. the economy can be christian too- i'm sure jesus will send a few bills for the shortfall.

as for christmas we'll unhijack the holiday from the christians and return it to the pagan festival it was in the first place. we'll make it a time to share and be with family and get your little invisible buddy out of it so everyone can join in

happy saturnalia!
