Native TrackIR support for Aces High?
« on: November 29, 2002, 05:28:29 PM »
I reposted this here as I don't know if HTC monitor the hardware forum much apart from Skuzzy's invaluable input. Does HTC plan to add native TrackIR support into Aces High? According to developers at Naturalpoint it requires a small .dll that games developers would find easy to implement into their products. Other flight sims such as IL-2, MS Flight Sim 2002 and Warbirds III will be supporting this device soon are there any plans for HTC to support this device?

I hope TrackIR will co-operate (some day) with saved cockpit head positions in nice smooth way.

I spoke to someone at TrackIR a while ago and they said they had approached HTC, I wonder if there is any news?

It's a device that sits on top of your monitor and picks up the movement from a special ring or wand or most often used a small reflective dot placed on your glasses, forehead, mic boom or headban on your headphones. By moving your head the view can be manipulated in your sim. Although it may seem odd and beg the question "how will I see the monitor with my head turned" the way it works is it splits your monitor into area's or regions. You assign a certain ammount of movement to each region so say for example you split your monitor into 4 sections vertically 'ABCD' (could be more or less areas.

                       A              B                C             D

Moving your head to the B or C position perhaps gives you 45 degree front left and right or perhaps left and right view whilst moving your head to A or D gives you 45 degree rear left and right or a six view. Movement can be as small or large as you want.

It can be made to work in the game without support but does not work as well as if the game has a special .dll written for it. The manufacturers say this .dll is easy to write and only a small file. Games like FS2K2 use it very well, it can be used in IL-2 and Forgotten Battles will have direct support as will Warbirds III soon apparently. For more information visit their web-site

They might well be stil ldiscussing or waiting for a developers kit before promising anything but I'll just keep this punted once in a while.

I've been stuck thinking about your TrackIR since I read the post this morning.

That's an interesting bit of hardware but a bit pricey to experiment with so here's some questions.

Is it usable in the game now?

Doesn't it give you a stiff neck and sore sholders after two or three hours?

I like the concept and might give it a try if it's ready for prime time.

Thanks for the information.  Now if we could just find a reasonable Head Mounded Display.:D
Easy in-game again.
