Yes the BIOS is up to date... most CD-RWs require being master on the chain... and you have to set this manually with the jumper.

Hehe my first CD-burner (2x) did cost more than whole frigging top-end computers do now.
Sold it to my friend about 2-3 years ago, it's still working like a charm (well, slow one).

Has a mouse been out for more than 2 years yet?  I won't buy one unless its been out for 2 years since everything is overpriced on initial release (see Staga's post above for verification)...I'll let you guys pay the big bucks, that way Supply/Demand lowers the price for the $$ smart guys like me :D

you gotta love it.  I've gone completely mp3 for about a year now.
put the mp3 disk players in the jeep and the wifes volvo (about $200 installed).  we got the dvd player(dvd/cd/mp3/jpg reader) with the surround sound home theater for the tv (gave the old stereo my son).  even got the cd/mp3 boom box for work.

now when I buy a new cd I rip it to the hard drive and put the original away (basicly for a back up).

it's great for in the car. I have about 80 albums with me at all times, on 6 discs in the visor holder.  no big rack of cd's to tempt the thieves, no case taking up room, & I could basicly drive to the middle of motana without having to change a disk(much safer to push a button on the remote than to switch cd's in traffic.  with 12-14 albums per disc it works much better & cheaper than a 12 cd changer and alot easier to put in your next batch of music.

the boom box is great for work. one disc last for a 12-hour shift.  i don't have to open it up to change discs during the work day, so everything works much better there too (alot of dust, smoke, grit, & general filth at work. not a great environment for the cd's or the inside of the stereo)

the dvd player has better sound than my stereo had when played through the home stereo so thats much bettter to.

the aiwa i put in the wifes car was $189 installed at 'car toys' back in february.  they've been getting cheaper.  it's a pretty cool model, instead of the detachable face, when you turn off the car the face splits in 2 peices that roll over and leave a flat black panel,  (looks alot like the dash plugs you get when you finally give up on stopping the local kids from stealing your stereo)  you can probably get one for less than 150 by now

Sandman,
I have that exact head unit in my car and I'm enjoying it.  It comes with a steering wheel remote which keeps my hands on the wheel.  The largest disk I've been able to burn is 144 rock songs on 80-minute media.  It's a little sensitive to bumps but that's it's only flaw.

Am I the only tin-eared, half deaf guy in here that can still hear a difference between the MP3 format and the CD format?

The MP3's seem to "lose" something; I guess I'd call it depth.

Try Zeppelin's "Black Dog" on both and see if it's just me.

But I still use MP3 for some stuff.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Definitely Toad. MP3 is not as good as mini-disc, and neither of them are as good as a CD. It's all about file compression; this does make it easy if you are talking about portable players though.

I have Sony's top of the range NetMD player (MZ-N1, I think). I can download MP3s and put them directly onto a minidisc through a USB cable. It also plays WMAs I think, but I primarily use MP3s. With 4 levels of compression, you can go for capacity or quality.

For my dance tracks I tend to compress the files a little, so I have a continuous noise while I jog. But when in the car, I go for 100% quality (for an MP3, that is). I have a mate who mixes dance music, and he's always sending me mini-discs with his new stuff on (not MP3). The MZ-N1 comes in very useful - kind of like having the best of MP3 and Mini-disc.
