Okay..so I f_cked up.

I was at a dinner tonight with the BOD of a large client of ours.  The guy sitting next to me was the co-founder of the company.  Great guy and a huge republican. One of the senior VPs..a guy I really respect for a number of reasons (one of which was adopting a 14month old Vietnamese girls from an orphanage) is a big time liberal and was involved in an argument with the co-founder over Iraq.

It was something out of an AH BBS twilight zone.  Midnight Tagut was the cool liberal, while Grunherz was the leathery old conservative..:)  sorry bud, couldn't resist.

Anyway...I had a captive audience at one point in the conversation and boldly stated that Iraq is a misdirection of US energy..and that Saudi Arabia was where their efforts shoud be leveled.

Faux pas of the week....one of the other directors is a Saudi and one who has the respect of all the other board members.

ooooops

But, the co-founder of the company (an 81 year old Guadalcanal Vet)...who discretly told me why my coments got the reaction that they did....also quietly said, "hell buddy..I agree with ya.  It's just a bit of a sensitive topic on this board.  I was golfing with the guy on 9/11 and his first comment was 'I hope WE weren't involved'..to which I said "But they were".  He smiled knowingly and said, "Yup, but we don't bring that up..I agree 100%".

Incidentally...one of the other directors went on a tour of the Normandy beaches with Stephen Ambrose...some connection with the University of Wisconsin.  he may be an AH member soon.

;)

Interesting night.

Now it is time to fly.  :)

Man that sucks...

The only advise I have for you in a situation like that is this:  The stronger the opinion, the more likely it shouldnt be voiced.  ;)

IF the Saudi director wasn't at the dinner then it might not be a big deal. One would assume that he would be the only one to take any real offense to your factual comments (my knowing nothing about the political and personal dynamics of the board, of course). The Saudi situation is a reality -- a difficult reality -- but one that is rightly starting to receive some attention. Hopefully, no one will see this as an opportunity to score some points at your expense. Good luck :)

The Saudi was at the dinner, but didn't hear what I said so I am fine.  It isn't really going to affect anything work-wise, it just served as a reminder to be careful in the future.

The conversation was really  something out of the O'Club and I just jumped in as I would have here....I won't do that again in a hurry.

For me there is no time to be "Politically Correct". That theme has slipped into our world's every day affairs and made it so you can't speak without pissing someone off.

I am just one of a growing number of people that are tired of the PC crowd trying to move in on our lives and how we are supposed to speak to each other in business or personal relationships. It happened in my own home last night and I damn near came unglued when she said "You can not talk about things like that. It's not politically correct." If I did not love the little redehead and respect her views the way I do I probably would have walked out and not looked back.

So for me I just don't give a damn about whether or not I am "politically correct" and everyone I know respects that. Because I say what I feel and what is needed to be said instead of dancing around the subject like a little p****. And no I don't consider myself a Republican, a Democrat, an Independent or any other political party member.

What's a big deal? You could not have been reasonably expected to know the guy was a saudi.
 Besides how does your statement on Saudi royal politics reflect on a saudi national living in America?

 Unless you said "all saudis are scum" or something to that effect...

The client pays us lots of money annually...upsetting a director of the company wouldn't be wise...no matter how right you may be.

This wasn't a "Holiday vs Christmas Tree" type of political correctness.

If that guy is a director, he is probably wise enough to realize what you ment and what most of americans think and not to act vindictively.

 The way you describe it, even if he tried, the rest of the directors would not like it.
