Monitor question (need help please)
« on: December 04, 2002, 10:58:43 PM »

a question to those who know more than I-

I think I fried my monitor.

Dell P991 Trinitron 19 inch CRT, .24mm pitch, 1280x1024 @ 85Hz.  I have been running it 32 bit 1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz.

I have to pull it and take it somewhere to have it fixed I guess.  There is a sort of heavy gray cast to everything, and black text, borders, etc., are somewhat smeared horizontally, edge to edge.  The colors are still bright.  Any smilies I throw in here look just fine :) just anything that should be white is now gray.

My wife, fearing a long, drawn-out session of computer/AH withdrawal, suggests I run out and get another.  Knowing little about monitors (never had one fail) I lean toward another CRT rather than a LCD (wife's suggestion) because as I understand it the CRTs display more color, react faster and can display moving images without smearing or artifacts.

Any suggestions, favorites?  I have looked at 19" and 21" CRTs, but have no idea what to do.  It would be nice to be able to see the Bee on the Macchi 202 more clearly (does anyone?).  Maybe that is my vid card (nVidia GeForce2 GTS 32MB), but am going to wait for nVidia to ship its next-generation architecture (code-named NV30) and read the reviews before I mess with that.  nVidia expects speeds two to three times that of the GeForce4 Ti 4600 but that is another post isn't it.

How important is pitch?  Is a .20mm-.22mm pitch significantly better that a .24mm? Aperture grille, shadow mask or stripe mask?

I would greatly appreciate your input and recommendations sirs.

You could learn alot from this thread. Sorry I can't help other than this link. I know squat about monitors. I always get the cheapest one on sale that 'looks' good. One I have now is a 19" that cost $179 and it works and looks great for 8-9 months now. Good luck.
