Wasn't this the plot line in a Roger Corman film back in the '70s?

Or at least it was worthy of a Jesse Franco film.  I'll bet if a cult video fan searched around the http://www.somethingweird.com library they'd find something close to it.  I would, but I have better things to do with my time.

Come on, guys - it's blown way out of proportion. Crawling over the hot asphalt while having your bellybutton kicked was considered a mild punishment in either soviet army or sports.

 "Amature" athletes in totalitarian countries enjoy immense privileges compared to the mere mortals - no need to work, appartments, cars, jobs for family members, governmental awards - orders, medals, etc., ample material compensation, friendship and company of important officials, public adoration, access abroad, immunity from the prosecution in mild cases such as rape, maiming and mayhem, etc.
 It is only natural there is a price attached to that. When you sup with a devil...

 Not that I condone the treatment, but it's the whole totalitarian regime that is a problem.

Is Ashcroft in charge of the USOC now? If so I will breath a sigh of relief. There's no way Iraq will out-gulag our Olymic athletes with John "Torquemada" Ashcroft on the job.

Yes no atrocities have ever been committed by the Hussein family or by Russian or Soviet troops.  Of course any reports of atrocities by Western forces are to be believed implicitly.  :rolleyes:
