First Person Shooter?
« on: December 05, 2002, 02:53:18 PM »
I am looking for a first person shooter thats more of a "sim" than a "game." My first shot at it was Battlefield1942 and its fun and all-but its rather like a PlayStation game.  I hear alot about "Operation FlashPoint" but I am very confused about this sim.  I guess you buy the thing in a store and download the WWII mods??   These mods are made by 3rd party folks so are they official...are some better than others...etc...lots of question there.........

America's Army is the best.
After that probably Ghost Recon.
OFP is more of an RTS game than a hard core infantry sim.

don't think there is a 1st person shooter that can be called a sim.. It's up to the players and most are kids that want to "quake" it up.

I'd suggest:

Battlefield  1942
Day of Defeat - Half Life mod
Urban Terror - Quake 3 mod
America's Army

Unreal 2003 (cause its prutty)

Ghost Recon is no fun online.. Last guy to not move on map is always winner.

America's Army is okay and it's free, but the best not imo..

Day of Defeat is great and could be the best WW2 fps and is a half life mod which can be and is well worth the download although it is something like 250mb fileand requires HalfLife

Ghost Recon is okay and haven't heard of any ww2 mods available.

Op Flashpoint is decent and has some big battles but you need a pretty powerful graphics card and cpu to run the big battles and I believe there is some WW2 mods and soldiers skins, vehicle sets and missions but not to sure cause haven't played in a while.

WW2 Online is a great armor/tank sim but as far as fps weapon lethality is pretty close but lacks some other important features.
If WW2 online was Day of Defeat infantry model, with ww2 online tank/armor model, and AH flight .. well it would be the ultimate WW2 online sim.

BF1942 is lets hop around and frag with poor weapon modeling but it looks pretty and is somewhat fun to play.

I agree - dated engine or not, DoD is still king of the kill.

If youre sick of "hopping in a circle with trigger depressed" Quake-ish gameplay, this is the game for you.

Day of Defeat, by a country mile.

The graphics are dated (but not terrible) and in terms of gameplay, it's way ahead of the rest.

Now if Valve could release Half-Life 2, and the DoD team port it over... and introduce iron-sighted shooting - it would be amazing. ;)

Circle strafing is something you don't really see - and you can't jump up and down like a nutter (stamina is modelled).

Also, you can be a machine gun trooper and lug the MG-34 and MG-42 about; deployed in tripod mode you can give supressive fire for your comrades. You haven't seen carnage until you see the MG-42 in action on a narrow street. ;)

The allies get the Browning .30 cal.

if you want mindless runnign around and shooting people get ut2003 or quake3

if you want a real tactical 1st person get AA...

the best tactical infantry game would have to be metal gear solid 1 AND 2

Swoop for INF, AA owns OFP.  No contest at all.
GR is maybe a little off in realism from OFP but the graphics are so much better.
I'm talking strictly INF here.  For combined arms OFP rules obviously.

What?!!!!!!

OFP doesn't have the best graphics... but is by far the best hard core infantry sim.

America's Army :p

Ghost Recon suffers from being limited to quake style arenas and is optimized for magic map squad command and control.

OFP set up for full realism is to infantry combat what AH is to MMOG WW2 air combat and IL-2 is to box sim WW2 air combat.

And some of the user made addons are absolutely awesome.
