What Makes A Good Online Flight Sim

IMHO:

First...Its Online.

1. Large Arena Divided by Pacific and European Conflicts

2. Great Server Connects

3. Reasonable Rates

4. Interesting and Active Community Options and Support. (BB's and Web Rings and Conventions)

5. Player Interaction to Game Developement (Feature Editors, SL inputs, New Feature/Acft Voting<for input nor final decision making> )

6. Great Customer Support.

Secondly its dealing with Flight!

1. Make it fly like a real airplane. Adverse Yaw..Stalls...Weight to performance ratios, Compression, Alttitude Performance

2. Gather the Data...design the Airplanes..and then Compare Contrast them with Other Acft vs how the comparison was in real life. Give me Early war an seldom flown theatres.  Gimme Brewster Buffalos and Russian Front and Early War Pacific.  And off course the Late War Western Europe Front.

3. Keep it a challenge just to fly...and rewarding if you can master it.

4. Gimme Engine Controls, Auto Pilot, Trim Settings.

And Lastly its a SIM!

1. Details...paint -ik-'s 109G-10 Struts RED, Make the Norden look like a Norden, Gyroscopic Gunsights, Bombs with Yellow Stripes, Theatre Markings on Acft., Detailed Airfields and Terrain, Clouds, Sun Glare,Fog, Rain, Night Time. I Wanna See Control Surfaces Move!

2. Strategy and Logistics.  Gimme a train to shoot at...and when it dies...make a field not have Fuel/Ammo for RTB Acft for X Mins. Gimme Troops storming the beach...then gimme a CV that tells me where its going...so I can protect it....Gimme a CV to Kill so no troops reach that beach.  Gimme Tank Farms...Gimme AAA to protect it all. Bridges, Factories, Army Bases/Troop concentrations.

3. Rolling Plane Set. Keep it balanced..and accurate..and disable out dated acft at appropriate times.

4. Gimme Great Collision Bubbles...damage Models...Make me Work That Wounded Puppy Home.

5. Ordanance /Fuel Options.  Let me pick what guns and what fuel...external or no external...all MG's or all Cannons.

6. Gimme Realism (oh god...not the "R" word) Meaning Make Me fly 20 Mins to a base....and not 5...but not 45 either.  Make B17 Otto Stupid..and not that good...but when I choose a B17..gimme 5 other AI B17 as wingman...and im the lead.

7. Give Me a incentive not to Die like an idiot...just for the fun of it (Usually a Furball Arena does the trick...keeps those people happy)

8. Gimme Icons at D30 or less...and thats it.

9. Gimme Voice Comms.

10. Gimme a Great Scoring Page! Based on Ability...not Volume.

11. My Perfect online Sim will give -IK- his Engine Requirements on his 109....just so after 3 years he will finally shut up and fly.

Gimme a Game:

1. Gimme a Boxed Version on the shelves....and something fairly descent off line to do...so people can learn..and practice. <Salute to IMOL's latest off line Addition...snicker...which I heard HT and PYRO had put together b4 they left anyway)

2. Give some good Arenas to help the learning curve...and gimme trainers to teach those people.

Pacific Main
European Main
Dueling Main
Instant Action Main
Training Main
No ICON/Scenario for the month Main

3. Give me Squadrons, Give me a 5th Radio, Give me Medals, Give me ".ignore" and give me a game that has a MINIMUM REQUIREMENT OF A PII266. Then give me the options to Disable certain graphic intensive options.

4. Gimme a Great Key Mapper.

5. Gimme Exotic Things, V1-Rockets, Remote Controlled Anti Ship Missiles...A-A Rockets, Rocket Planes..Jet Planes...and give it to me on the last day of RPS.

6. Gimme Views Options that will knock my socks off...Give Me redouts/blackouts/ pilot movement vs G Forces/ Pilot Damage that will make me think "I AM IN THE COCKPIT"...and then make me realize im bleading and the cockpits on fire too

7. Gimme a reason to live, If I die, I cant come up from the base I last left. Unless its my countries last base. Hence..no more Vultching/Base overwhelming. And If I die..im out of that action unless I fly twice as long to get back to it.

8. Gimme Increased AAA Accuracy as a countires numbers dip below a certain ratio compared to other countries.  IE Purp 30 Gold 30 Green 30 Red 5   Red gets Uber AAA.  Keep the playing field a bit even.

9. Multiple Monitor option

10. A Scoring system that has multiple sorting options so I can find out who has the best Kill/Death ratio in a P51.  Etc...etc..

11. And Lastly gimme GunJam...in a low and slow F4F.  And ill be a happy man.

P.S. Can we have a Spell Checker in the Radio as well

You smell that? Do you smell that?
Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
The smell, you know that gasoline smell, smelled like victory.

I was just reading another thread...and something just dawned on me.  Somebody said the words "Microsfot Flight Sim with Guns"

Imagine...Microsoft Flight sim...Change the Flight characteristics from a Cesna 172 to a P51 but just as much accuracy and Acft Artwork so it look exactly like a P51 on the inside...Make the Terrain 1940's era....and model Guns and damage.

Wouldnt take alot in theory for Old Bill Gates to Make the true "Ultimate Immersive Hi Fidelity World War II Flight Sim".

But then we would have to talk to tower...and actually "Fly" all the way to France.....

Nah..... Ill stick with AH and WB for now

How Many people here would be interested in sending those guys $50 non refundable even if one day before Beta the Company Goes Defunct, but if not promise to be allowed to BETA Test, because we love you and want you to have the money to do the job right, sort of donation.  In all seriousness.

I know I would....want my Credit Card Number Doug & Dale?

My perfect Sim would be everything you guys have mentioned...
I would have NO main arena though.  Instead of an RPS I would have a rolling arena set...a choice of two or three arenas available at a time, i.e. battle of britain or midway.
You could still fly what you like to fly, you could still have all the applicable strategic elements, and you wouldnt have to see 190's escorting Betties being attacked by Zekes.
The AI bombers are a good idea, lets take it a step further....if you log into an arena, and there are only a few players on, then there will be AI fighters also until more players log on.  That way you could always fly in one of the more unpopular arenas, and always be sure of an opponent.

Darn, now you have me cooking!
What about a set of eight scenarios, with duplicates for the more popular ones, with a specific start time and mission goals. The scenarios would each be about two hours in length, with start times staggered so you would never have to wait more than ten minutes to start a flight. That time could be taken up with pre-flight briefings.
Coupled with AI opponents taking up the slack, this could really work!
I would like this much better than Warbirds endless capture the flag, which I can get for free playing Team Fortress.

Can't add much to this except:

Give me all of the things that don't work right in AW and WB...fix em and add em to AH
Eliminate the BF-17 and make it what is was...a friggin heavy Bomber
Eliminate unrealistic spin models and make an a/c stall and spin when it is supposed to; if ya pull too hard you lose E and subsequent control of the a/c
Enable strat so the game has a purpose other than fly and die, kill and grab night in and night out.
Provide connect quality which allows people to fly w/o getting dumped or guns firing blanks.

Hell, I don't want much except to be able to enjoy my addiction

Nice list, Hat Trick.

The ONLY one that counts, tho, is your number six, "Great Customer Service"--w/o it, all else is moot.

I could add another item, too:

Let us Mac guys play.

just sayin <tm>

Ye of little faith, for I am the wise one, derived from the dark side, I am the shadows that lie in wait for you when you close your eyes in a timid slumber each night. I am the chill at the tip of your nose and the sweat that forms upon your life line in the palm of your hand ....I am the thing that wakes you up in the middle of the night, soaked in fear and wrapped in your cloth carried from childhood.  I am depervation, fear, the gentle energy that pushes up the hairs upon your back, I am lonliness ... for I am........Death From Above.
