What are the differences between the various models of P-47?
« on: December 06, 2002, 02:18:51 PM »
Besides paint scheme, rocket load-out, and all-around visibility, are there any differences in flight handling amonst the 3 models of P-47?  The charts seem to show that the two more popular models have the same climb rate and speeds at same altitudes.

There is, but they aren't earth shatteringly different.  The D-11 turns the best and handles the best at low speed (although you want to avoid getting too slow in any Jug).  The D-25 is the slowest of all but accelerates better than the D-11 and has the best overall ord loadout.  The D-30 is about as fast as the D-11, accelerates the best, climbs the best, and it's got a dive brake which is handy.  All of them handle best at high speed.  I haven't flown Jugs for a while, but I think the D-11 is best if you just want a fighter, but take a 25 or 30 for ground attack.

D-11:
less fuel, no paddle-blade prop (worse climbrate & acceleration) a little lighter so turns better, no wing mount points, terrible forward visibility.
a real joy to fly.

D-25:
bubble canopy, wing mount points, "bazooka" rockets (tubes stay on the wing after they are used and slow you down).
better climber then the D11 but slower. not as stable at stall speeds as the D11.

D-30:
bubble canopy, all the loadout options of the D25 but has HVAR rockets instead of the bazooka. Big wing DT option.
has a slightly better WEP so it's the best climber of the 3 and as fast as the D11 (and accelerates better then the d11).
all the dive flaps seems to do is turn on the light in the cockpit.
