Yes to do and yes they did. If you watch the trailer carefully you can see a hobit getting picked up by an ent for a spilt second, you can only see up to it's knees. Verrrrry big.

umm, I think in the movie version of Fellowship, Aragon gives them the swords right before the nazgul on the watchtower scene.

If you wanna get on Jackson's case, how about Arwen even being in Two Towers. I don't recall her mentioned at all in that book.

2 towers is gonna be the 1 with the most stuff missing from the book...thats what I've been reading....they wanted more hmm hmm violence and all dat stuff

but they did leave the ENTS in....pheeewww

the 3rd movie is gonna be the closest to the book as possible.

as for Tom Bombadil...Jrr tolkien said Tom is a mysterious character....his origin is never known....and I wish they did have em him in though....so since Tom is NOT important to the fellowship....they decided to leave em out.

Some cuts had to be made, otherwise each part of the trilogy would have translated into 5 hours of film. I love Tolkien's work but only a true, slobbering, raving fanatic could sit through that.

I could easily sit through 3 x 24 hour movies about the trilogy. I mean...come on.

I've read every book Tolkien wrote more than once, and I think Ive read the lord of the rings triology 10 times or something like that. But I still havent figured out Tom Bombadil. Ive read Silmarillon maybe 10 times too, but I have yet to find a clue as to who/what Tom really is.

Btw, Silmarillon would make a great move. Or 3 great movies, or one 24 hour movie *drool*

Picture me slobbering and raving.

I 1st read the trilogy as a freshman in college. I remember skipping a few classes as I hated to put the damn thing down. I'm with Hortlund, I pick up the books about every 5 years now and reread them. (That makes quite a few readings for this old slobbering fanatic).

I've researched that exact question(I know I know i'm a geek)......and there is NOTHING

his origins are not known...his life is not known....JRR Tolkien was asked that question...He said "Tom is a mystery" and left it at that....the only thing we know is that Sauron couldn't do anything to em...so Tom had no worries.

Friend of mine with an English degree told me this. He studied the Tolkien in university.

That doesnt make sense at all. If Tom was the first man he should have died ages ago. Who is he married to btw? Is she an elf? (elven?) Or is she a maia?

(Personally I think Tom is a maia.)

Anyway, SLO I think you are wrong. If I remember correctly I think its Gandalf that says something like, if the ring is returned everyone will be enslaved blah blah ...Toms kingdom (or whatever) would last a while like an island, then it too would fall to Sauron.

I cant remember exactly where I read that though.

It's Galadriel who gives them the elvish swords, it's all in the extended version, which I bought even though I already had the original DVD... nevertheless, a very good purchase, since the extended version adds some things that should have NEVER been left out (the presents from Galadriel are one of those things).

As for Arwen, heck, I know it's not in the books, but I do not mind the "artistic license" one bit.
