I worked (after the fact) with the guys who designed the original pitch trim actuator for that series of aircraft. If you don't lube those things they will fail. I dealt with a lot of screw actuators returned to us for diagnosis and repair, and it's all about the lube. Usually they just jam and won't move. The failure they had, they must have seriously neglected that unit.

could be tough to prove poor maintenance was the fault.
that type of horiz. stab is an inherrently weak design.
airline could squeak out by blaming the OEM
