Admin help - pages won't refresh after seeing them
« on: August 02, 1999, 10:20:00 PM »
Hello,

Just an admin request...

When I visit a post, and it gets a new reply, revisiting that post sometimes won't show the new replies.  This always happens when I add my own reply, I can't see it until I reboot my computer.

I had this problem on AGW until only recently when Argo updated his UBB version.  Yes, I DO have refresh set on every visit checked in the internet options settings.  I'm using MSIE 5.0.  Hitting the "delete temp files" button doesn't help, and clicking on the frame then right-clicking and hitting "refresh" doesn't help either.  The only thing that reliably fixes this is either browse elsewhere for a sufficient time that the web browser history gets all full (about 200 web pages I think, not sure) or reboot.

Is there anything else I can try?  It's sorta annoying when I can't see new replies to posts that have the red folders.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

hey Eagle,

question - if you turn off the Cache for your browser does that help?  it almost sounds like your going through a proxy that is caching the information non-local to your machine.  i know that some isp's setup a proxy for thier customers for "faster" browsing (AOHELL has web pages 6 months old show up) so this could be playing a part.

Is there a separate setting for turning a cache off?  I am not connecting through a proxy server if that's what you mean...

ok first off i use netscape so this will be different for you but...

check under your cache management and see if you can set both your memory and disk cache to "0" bytes.  after you've done that see if there are any buttons for clearing the cache if there is click em.  this will slow down your browsing but it should be a good check. after you've done that see if the problem goes away.  i've seen similar problems when going through a proxy/bordermanager server to  a web page.

double check your proxy settings and make sure they are not autoconfiguring.  if you recieved you browser on a disk from your ISP this could be hardcoded in. (yes they can do this to you M$ incurrages it.)

if you have NS loaded see if that makes a difference.

check your IP address (WINIPCFG.EXE in 95/98 or IPCONFIG.EXE in NT) if its a 10.x.x.x or a 192.168.x.x number you are going through a proxy as those numbers have to be translated into real IP addresses to get you on the net.

give some more info and i'll see if i can figure anything else out.

msie requires a min cache size of 1 meg, and there is no way to disable it.  My ip address is dynamically assigned by my isp and is set to my modem dialup adaptor.  I also have a 192.168.1.1 ip address I set to my home LAN but my tcp-ip settings are set to look to the modem.  The auto-config checkbox is unchecked.

As far as I can tell, the page simply isn't refreshing on my own computer.  With my modem, even a 10 reply thread takes at least 5 seconds to load, but after I've seen it once during a session, clicking on that thread again results in it immediately popping up without loading it again from the web.  It's fairly obviously loading it from local memory.

Like I said, I had this problem with AGW, but it went away.  I never had this problem with anandtech's UBB setup or with a car related BBS I read as well.  I dunno if there's a "force refresh" setting anywhere other than the places I've checked, or if there's a UBB setting to force refreshes.  I think there's an HTML tag that will force a refresh on each page loading but I'm not sure.

eagl,

you can try setting "check page" to everytime and setting your "history" to zero pages.  this will make it think it has never visited the page and automaticly check it.

Check page is already set to everytime, I just set history to 0, although that should only save the links not the pages themselves.

update - I tried setting everything to zero, cache size, history, refresh page every time, and nothing helps.

Like I said before, I had this problem with argo's page for a long time but something happened and the problem went away on his page.
