A Buff tale...
« on: December 16, 2002, 05:08:25 AM »
This post comes just handy!

I upped a Yak 9-U yesterday for some routine CAP, when one, possibly 2 dots blimp on the radar, nearby.

I thought they were IB our field, so I wanted to intercept. Then, as I approach, I see they are buffs, possibly 2 "box" of them. Actually they were 4 boxes, flying very tight, at about 12-13k.

I think that I have a fair chance to take down a couple of them in my Yak, at that height, so I don't replane, and I take the chance.

After some time chasing, 3 things are evident: they are not going for our field, they are climbing, and I am not gonna catch them under 18-20k

I start climbing after them, and in the process their target become clear: Rook HQ. I type the problem in CAPS, and 2 fellow rooks come to help.

By that time, I'm near 22k, and one of the rooks on the help start the first passing run. The Buffs formation is still as tight as the first time I saw them, and they managed to maintain a perfect box even when they turned due West. No newbies there. The fact is confirmed when I see the first rook going down in flames.

At 23k, and slightly ahead I make my first pass. Roll and dive, I'm approaching the formation really fast with a slight turn. They open fire at about 900 yds. perfectly synconized. My framerate falls to near 10, because of all the tracers. I'm amazed seeing the firepower that 12 B-17's hold. Quick pass on the front B-17, without even try to adjust. I knew if I fly straight for a couple seconds, I will be confetti. I level heading West some 800 yds below the Buffs, and very fast, and start climbing for the second pass. No evident damage....both on me and on the Buffs. Meanwhile, another Rook comes to help, and manage to score some hits on the trailing Box, before he goes in flames too. Now the trailing Box is lagging slowly.

I make another pass on the 3 leading boxes and hear some pings on my airframe. I manage to hit one of them in the wing, and one engine of the outer left plane is smoking. But I had to change tactics, as the trailing Box is falling behind and I am pinged each single time I dive on the big formation.

So I go for it, and make another pass on the last box. Now I hit him good, and one of the B-17's on the box is burning. Mind that the passes were made over 300 kts., and even in this case, these guys  managed to score hits on me!. The burning Buff dies finally, and I get a kill on Addy. Another plane of his box is smoking in 2 engines, the left ones if my memory suits me well. So he won't catch up with the rest.

I switch the attack to the 3 remaining boxes to try to, at least, slow them down, and give time to my fellow Rooks to intercept. Unfortunately, Yak is not ideally suited for this task, and now my ammo is almost gone. I spend my last 20 cannon rounds. This last pass leave me with my left elevator gone, and no ammo left.

B-17's continue their run against our HQ, but I have nothing to throw agains them. One of the buffs is smoking on one engine, but they look quite OK. I proceed to disengage and land one of the most valued kills in my recent AH time, and express my consideration to Buff pilots.

They finally made it to our HQ, and manage to kill our radar. I'm glad they made it. They flew beautifully, fought bravely, and the whole fight had a resemblance of "this is what it must have been like". Keez, Addy and the rest, this was one of the most interesting fights I had in AH.

Oh!, and a little detail: they were Bishops  ;)

What an excellent encounter! I hope I get to see that, and now with the upcomming update we might see more of this. Just the thought of upping a 190A8 and attacking a big formation of B17's like that gets me all worked up!

Thanks for the compliment, Pepe. We all agreed that you and that other plane were "bloody patient buggers" compared to all the "dead-6 kamikaze attack" fighters out there.

That flight was part of our squadron meeting. We're No9 Squadron RAF, a bomber squadron led by what seems to be becomming the "buff legend" Revvin. So we fly buffs every week again, and it's starting to get hard to come up with a formation we havent flown yet ;). This week featured the "diamond box with the last b17 box slightly behind" formation :p.

We thought that you and the F4U (if I'm right) were using vox.... is that right? Because quite a number of times did you and him come in at the same time, and sometimes from completely different sides too... This made life quite hard on us... Specially since Revvin and Imawake2 had lost all vox comms, so it was up to just me and Addy to call out the cons.

Anyways, it was great fun for us too, pepe. Good flying on your part as well.

Keez,

Yes, the F4U was a squaddie (Rraptorr), who took of hvy to pound some field, but jettison ord when he knew about your box and flying  ;). We have only 50% vox. I have my mic broken (I think this really adds to my squad AH experience  :D) so I could only type.

The bottomline of this tale is, IMHO, that Buffs are fun, both to fly and to attack, they are far from defenseless, and able to inflict a lot of damage...it only take skilled people, like you guys, to do it right  :) What I would ask is the possibility of detaching a single plane from formation, so the survivors don't lag behind.

Again, thks for the fun, and

Hehe Pepe you don't know how many times I cursed that damned Yak that shadowed us and made some very impressive fast slashing attacks on us We upped that mission after an unsuccessful mission we posted up that was open to all. The mission you attacked was No.9 squadron members only. We have practised flying formation and hand out formation positions to each bomber in the formation and I'm lucky enough as CO to be blessed by a group of guys that fly formation and bomb extremely well.

You did a great job and caused us much hassle as we decided wether to turn to target or stay on our present course until we could perhaps shoot you down. After a number of very fast slashing attacks which made it hard to get a shot on you we decided as you extended to make the turn. My guys held form well and we headed to target. Addy got picked off and fell from position but we needed to get enough ord on the HQ so had to leave him to your mercy. As we got closer to target I spent some time in the norden as another squadie relogged and joined me as a gunner.

Keez kept me up to date on the state of the formation, we use a drop on lead method which requires close formation flying as I am the only one who calibrates and then call the drop to the others using a variety of salvo's and delays. He informed me that you had broken up the formation and it's at that point I don't know if they managed to shoot you down. To be honest we had to just hope you made a mistake and to throw enough bullets in your direction and hope that we got you first. As the formation was broken up a little we all calibrated and managed to get our ord on target and turned for home. Not sure what happened to Keez but I know I was jumped by around 4 cons of various type and was shot down a few sectors from the Rook HQ.

Was a hell of a lot of fun and capped off the night nicely. Thankyou for the kind words online and here in the forums, it can sometimes be a little rough for bombers which is frustrating sometimes as we fly our bombers in the most historical way we can, I can't remember the last time we went more than 25k and we try to keep the planes close to their historical operational alts ie Lanc to 22k and B17 between 20-25k. Hope to catch you online next week and resume the battle

Well I was the Formation That started falling behind!!:(  This by far was one of the funnest runs I think we have made. From our end of the Battle, it sure was fun to have some guys be patient and attack with a plan. Not the endless wave of "dead on 6" attackers. Revvin was going on about "that yak" because we needed to turn to target, and you wouldn't leave, or make a stupid mistake!! The reason I fell behind was you took out 2 of my engines, and by the time I had a chance to ditch that plane, I was to far behind and the writing was on the wall!!! I wasn't going down with out a fight!! I did manage to shoot down the 109 That had joined in, before I died. Even though I died, I was glad you and your squadie attacked. Skills on both side of the Battle where apparent and made it that more fun!! Kudos to you and your squad mate Pepe!!:D :D

This reminds me of a flight a squaddy and I made Thursday night.  We took up two formations of 17s and headed toward and nme field.  Neither of us are expert bomber pilots so we stayed at 13.5k to avoid the winds.  We saw several enemy fighters below us, but they were all intent on attacking our fields so we continued on unmolested.

Just about when we got to our IP an La-7 started shadowing us.

To make a long story short, he shot down all three of my planes without me getting a hit on him.  All three were before I went to my sight.  I was shooting at him every pass.  After my last plane died, I ./joined my squaddy and gunned for him.  He got one salvo off, but the La-7 finished all three planes before he could make his second pass.

The thing that impressed me about it was that he was very careful about how and when he attacked.  The first couple of attacks were straight from behind, but he broke off as soon as I started shooting.  He then was more careful.  Each of his attacks was made in a way that made if very difficult for me to track him, or judge the proper lead.  The guy was a master.

I just wish I had written his CPID down so I could've asked for training and given him a proper here.
