How about combining Pearl Harbor with Midway?

Divide an ocean map in half with a "land strip" to keep the CVs from each battle from interacting too much.

On 1 side, put Oahu (or 2 or 3 or 4 of em) and 4 (or maybe 8) Japanese CVs.
Enable A6M-2s, Kates and Vals for the Japs.
P-40Bs, Wildcats, SBDs, M-16s, and Bostons for the US.

On the other side of the map, create 2 or 3 "Midway Islands" and give each side 4 CVs.
Enable A6M-2s, Kates and Vals for the Japs.
Wilcats, SBDs, and TBMs for the Allies.

************************************

* Enable NO player controled ship/shore guns or PTs for either side.
This will force all ships to be killed by aircraft ONLY!

* Make CV and Cruiser kill number just under 2 plane max bomb load for the opposing country.  1 hit to kill a destroyer.

* Place CV spawn points 1 - 2 hours from the action, so the CT doesn't empty when CVs are sunk.

* Perhaps enable only 1 plane type per CV.  This way when a CV is sunk, it will affect the game-play.  TGs wil also have to stay togeter to be effective as well!

* "Thin out" the TGs.  Maybe 1 CV, 1 Cruiser, 1 destroyer per TG.  Spread them apart if possible.

* Minimal radar and warning distance!

* Perhaps enable TBMs from Midway Island(s) only.

One important component of a good CT map is typicaly that it have a narow front. A Narow Front is one that I would define as two or perhaps three obvious areas whear battles can take place. This helps the smaller numbers in the CT find a quick good fight. Even on Maps with much broader fronts generaly just one or two bases wind up being the front line. Having said that and knowing how much time is involved in mapmaking it might be best to not mix it up with regard to these two very well done maps, but keep them seperate and pure and more in keeping with their historical backdrop wich is a component we try and keep to in the CT.

True Brady,

But I think that one thing that this map would offer would be surprise attacks.
Also, either map would be kind of limited.  This map would offer a better variety of action.

The only problem(s) I see with that is/are:

Suprise atacks are fun for the attacker, not the guy being vulched.

Two much varity on a small map may not be such a good thing with such small numbers. look at Greace for example their were several different posable bases to have battles beetween but on almost every night their were batttles between Just one and rarely 2 of the fields.

I think the funest thing in the CT is that we get some good fights developing between a couple bases, while they may ocure on this map I see a lot of work going into it with little return. We could have the same fights ona number of other maps using the same planes.

Each Oahu island should have 3 airfields, relatively close to each other.  There will be no base captures, very little reason to up at a vulched field.  As always, most folks will want to fly Allied.  The attacking Japanese may not always be in such an advantagous position, even with surprise.  Hopefully, they will also bring in bombers and torpedo planes, sitting ducks against P-40s and Wildcats.  Surprise is what can make this set-up imersive - in historical terms.

If by chance, the Japs have greater numbers than the US, I would gladly fly Allied, whatever the odds.

As far as the Midway fight goes, surprise will offer no one much more of an advantage.  Sure, the Japs may get to pound Midway, but the real fight will be for the carriers.  Returning Japanese planes will give away their task groups locations.
