think of it this way hb- it's a much better thing to have kids that are educated about guns and know how to handle them safely and properly than to have kids that are mystified by them and see them as 'forbidden fruit'.

I felt the same way. Then I noticed the action was open.

To this day my dad says the reason I am safe around guns is that he made it a rule to stop what he was doing and show me a gun (He had over 100 at one time) if I asked him. Guns were no big deal to me. I knew they were dangerous and that I had to handle them carefully, but they held no mystery for me.

That is one of the secrets. Let them see it. Buy a .22 so that when you go shooting the kid can go with you. Teach him.

I shake my head sometimes. Parents who wouldn't dream of not teaching their kid to swim (just in case he falls in) keep them from guns so that if they do get around them, they don't know how to act safely.

Three rules:
1. The gun is always loaded unless YOU check it.
2. Never point it at anything you don't want shot.
3. Check what is behind your target.

If you teach your child these three rules, they will be able to enjoy a life of shooting sports.

Rip I don't let them near the gun, I keep it locked up in the toolbox in the truck with me. Even looking at that jpg with the empty gun with the slide back pointed in dylans direction gives me the shakes. Guess I need to loosen up a bit.

The late Elmer Keith practiced long range gunnery with large caliber (.44 and .45 caliber) pistols. He hit targets at an honest 600 and 700 yards, in front of witnesses.

Bob the Nailer uses a sniper rifle, with a scope. Elmer used iron sights and a set of squinty eyes.

The funniest single comment I heard at the con was from Rip when I heard him ask Puck if he'd loaded blanks for you.......

I fired a few guns at a range in Las vegas this year. First time ive ever fired a gun.

I think i used a barretta 9mm a Mp5 machine gun and FABULOUSLY a Mp40 WW2 type machine gun

I fired at the full length of the range which I'd guess was 30 or 40 yards, cant really remember but it was a long way.put it this way i couldnt tell where id hit until i moved the target closer

What i found really suprising was how easy it was to hit even at the full distance.Now ive seen it , if anyone points a gun at me from anywhere, even a football pitch length, I will not be dumb enough to try to run away! I'll put my hands up and pray!. If they decide to fire even a complete novice like me could hit with little difficulty.I must say its was a real eye opener considering all we brits ever see is movies of guns.We have a false hollywood impression of their accuracy.
The MP40 was a beautifully stable weapon!, I used the 'osama bin ladin' target and i blew him to peices

much to the amusement of the gun shop owners

All my bullets were on the target figure.
My baretta pistol shots were standing without rest and i again hit all on the figure.Got him between the eyes even

After seeing those circle targets i wish id tried those to see if i could bunch em better but i was having more fun blowing sadam hussains balls, eyes and nose off

they said 'damn fine shooting' so i suspect i did pretty good. ill try to get a pic of the targets on here so you guys can critic them

st santa... yep... it's a pity but... if you visit I will let you shoot a variety of firearms... best I can do. It's up to you to fight back against nanny.

hazed.. I have noticed that, with first timers, there is a huge difference in shooting ability even tho I am instructing them all the same way.. I would probly have said that you have "natural ability". It is unfortunate that you cannot develop your abilities and enjoy the shooting sports where you live...

Elmer Kieth developed the 44 mag and.... the semi wadcutter bullet from 44 special overloads. He was a great shot. There is a guy now that shoots balloons at 600 yards with a 6" Smith in 44. Watched him do it on some Turner outdoorsy show.... was amazed.

My dad made it his duty to teach me and my brother about guns as soon as he could. I shot my first gun when I was ten (20 guage shotgun) and every once in a while my dad and my brother and I would head to the range and shoot off a few round of Dad's .38.

I know how to break down most semi-automatic pistols and can take apart an M-16, but I digress.

Bottom line is...I'm not a crazed killer...nor do I envision killing people. Once I'm old enough to shoot alone, I will. Kids need to learn early on that guns are not toys...are not to be played with.

Check chamber, check target, check backgound is what I've always been told.

Well in 95 I was a Ma duce instructor at Baumholder, I can put 6 touching at 10 meters and a whole belt in to the drivers compartment on a BDRM at 1200 meters..... ont the flip side if I didnt shoot well my family didnt eat Cuz the Army didnt let you reup if you couldnt shoot. Now days I do Black powder and consider 5 rounds in the size of a soft drink can good <@ 15 meters> it all depends on practice any one can be good.

Stsanta, not only are our gun laws much less restrictive here, but here's the shooting range close to my home that is maintained by none other than the state. Open sunrise to sunset, the very restrictive rules are as follows: Don't shoot the place up! Sorry man.
