I loved it today. I got my coffee logged in and set about hitting bases for capture when a few whiners were heard to say "Oh God not the Piza map Im out of here until its gone." They didnt even bother to try it.

HELLO! Its different now take a closer look.

When I was in there, I noticed none of the aircraft/vehicles introuced in the new version were not available...I had to scoot back to work, is it working right now?

Yes, I just drove (and crashed) a Tiger successfully on AKDesert.

Perhaps you tried it in offline mode w/ the old AKdesert?  I got a new AKDesert when I connected to MA today.

The elevations are 'less' pronounced? The big question is are the colors 'darker'? Sorry at work. Always liked the canyons in this map but not these 2 things...

The colors in the new AKDesert appear to be darker and less painful on the eyes.  Not extremely different, just a little darker.

strat targets are alot denser now.. you can do some serious damage there :)  I flew a stuka into a radar factory, tossed the 3600 lb bomb in, and whala! got a page full of object destroyed messages.  :D  earned me over 12 bomber perkies too
