And found this....

Looks slick, what can you tell me/us about it??  Dream works or something that might lead to a prototype?

That was released to the press 2 weeks ago.  Boeing has been working closely with its customers and this is what *they* want...something that flies alittle higher, alittle faster, and can go 10,000 to 12,000 miles.  Cost per seat is offset by the fact that it cuts 3 hours off PAC and ATL routes and 1 hour off domestic US routes, and the fact that the more fuel it burns, the higher it flies, the less fuel required to fly at the higher altitude.

Its real, its in the pre-design mode now, and the software I support is going to build it.  Pretty exciting!

Well, pardon me for the post location, forgot AKDejaVu is the BBS police here    Forgot what area I was in when I posted, a thousand pardons DejaVu...

Rip, read a bit about in rec-aviation.homebuilt, some of the guys starting talking about it among their discussion of canard aircraft.  Specifically if there were more or less gains, aerodynamically, in a canard vs conventional aircraft design.

For example, Beech made the Starship and while a beautiful bird, last I knew 19 sat unsold on a tarmac somewhere.

Aw, no BD5-J?  Curious, how much of a price and performance difference is there between the jet and prop model?

That designs been around since the late 60's early 70's, but still a nice design.  I prefer more convention Midi-lights, and plan on building my own once the kids get alittle older.  Wife has it in the long term budget, and I'll be building a Pole barn soon for my project, but am waiting till I get alittle closer to retirement (about 13 years, 5 years if microsoft splits 4 more times!  )

Several.  For the guts and techy stuff, goto www.bd-micro.com  and read about each.

In a nutshell (and largely to annoy AKDejaVu hehee)...

BD-5 B   Reciprocating engine 2stroke Hirth most popular though some use Rotax's or even heavy, 4 -cyclinder Hondas.  Most speeds in these setups are well below 200, though varies greatly on engine and cooling system.

BD-5 T  What Im building, uses a rebuilt T-62 turbine (Quantum makes these).  Best compromise...benefits of a prop and benefits of a turbine/jet...less fussy about heat and no need to invent a way to cool a mid-engine design.  Scoops and inlets cause drag.  Also, this system is much faster than the B since you have eliminated a cooling system (scoops, water/radiators, etc).  Top speed in these are around 250 or more.

BD-5  J  Jet.  Suck, bang, blow baby.  Requires the smaller wing (17ft versus the B and T's 21.5) and a much more rugged fueslage for the G loads.  Last I heard, they put out 300 pounds of thrust and toss about at 350 mph.  Big enemy...fuel consumption.  You can carry 36 gallons and she'll eat that up in under an hour.  Again, some newer engines coming to market to make these guys stay up longer.  You'll see these guys flying for the Bud Lite Air Force (www.blaf.com) and a few other airshow performers.

Yes Id love to J, but for cross country flyng, Id be climbing, cruise and descending every 30 minutes.  My bladder aint THAT small!

If you are really pondering building an airplane, there are many.  The RV series are fantastic (www.vansaircraft.com) and I confess my favorite site to gaze at is www.viper-aircraft.com  where they have a 2 seat, fighter-looking jet kit available, made of carbon fiber and such composites.

Rip...if you are thinking of building, be sure to visit the Arlington Airshow up your way, or Oshkosh!
