Screen flickering ... help
« on: December 19, 2002, 07:33:51 AM »
I installed a Radeon 8500 and ever since then my screen flickers and it gets on my nerves.

I tried adjusting the refresh and it seems to go away once I change it from Optimum to 75hz back to optimum.   However, once I shut down and restart the flickering is back and I have to go through the same refresh thing again.

The wife is not liking it much as she doesn't know or want to know how to adjust the refresh.

Any thoughts?

I usually set the refresh rate to what I want and ignore optimum.
optimum on my system means slow refresh rate...
if I set it to 85 or 100 (or whatever) the setting will remain.

I tried 1 and 2.

I won't go near 3 though:)  Having a wife is one thing that keeps me from being a FDB in REAL life.........

As far as switching the refresh to something that I want.  I will do this and it doesn't stop the flickering.  Argh!

If you're running WinXP it's a known glitch. You can fix it by either getting the newest drivers (catalyst 2.5 released last week, that might fix it) or forcing the refresh rate.

<> Try installing the drivers again before you go anywhere near this part. Don't uninstall them, don't manually delete them, just install the drivers again. Either use the ones off the Radeon CD or download the Catalyst .2.5 driver set from ATi. I reinstalled my drivers (2.4 set) because of the same problem and that fixed it. Restarting, running Dx-based games, and beating it up in Gmax have yet to cause any problem thus far.

!!Warning!! Choosing a refresh rate that your monitor can't handle WILL fry the thing. So make sure it'll handle 120Hz (only an example) before you force that rate down its throat!

Start Menu > Run > type "dxdiag" and whack enter.

On the faaaaaaaar right, there's a tab called "More Help". And on that tab resides a button called "Over-ride" which you will hit. A little box pops up with two little radio-buttons and a type-in field. Be very careful here and type in the refresh rate you want to force. Just type in the numbers "85" for starters. 85Hz is a middle-of-the-road rate, and every monitor built since '96 can handle that. If it works out alright and your monitor can handle 120Hz, try it with 120. Not all monitors can take 120Hz though, so be damn careful.

If your wifey is printing some stuff for the PTA and the screen explodes, it ain't my fault! :D
