Well, not so new any more. A present from my mother

And what a present.

Best thing I ever had. I use it to heat up my coffee mug in the morning, to cook a baked potato (12 mins) or to heat a curry or similar ready meal. Very quick – bachelor’s best friend.

anyone remember the story going around (not sure if it wasn't urban legend).. of the microwave that was picking up RF..and this family sat down to dinner and their microwave started cursing at them..supposedly picking up a nearby trucker's CB radio..

No, but English cuisine being what it is, you do have to register and license them. I believe they must also be kept at a secure "Cooking Club" but you can check them out at certain specified, government approved "mealtimes".

Beet1e, you will find that microwaves do awful things to most foods. I hate mine and use it as a last resort.

beetle from one bachelor to another you'll find in emergent situations microwaves dry wet socks quite well too.

With the exception of breads or other oven browned foods, I can make anything in a microwave taste as well or better as stove/oven cooked food. My mother now believes me: she now has me cook certain things because I make it both better and faster than the conventional way.

Before I was married I lead a very typical bachelor's life...and I know very well that a bachelor's best friend is NOT a microwave. Using one entails work...and eventually cleaning up.

A bachelor's best friend is any place that will cook edible food and bring it to your door. Cleaning up afterwards should involve little else except shoveling what is left over into the trash.

This is true, please heed my words. Microwaving liquids (especially in a coffee mug) can cause the liquid to explode upward as you remove it from the microwave.

I've only had it happen to me once. I was warming up some water because the coffee pot was in the dishwasher. I reached in, grabbed the mug, and then I noticed "hey, the water is shooting out the top of the mug". Ouch ouch ouch. Luckily the water wasnt too hot yet, and did not cause serious burns.

This mainly happens in mugs that are (1)new, and (2) in mugs that have very smooth interiors. The water builds up energy, and has no place to release it. The jarring movement of removing the mug causes it all to be released at once.

That's called a burp. The water needs some impurities to promote a smooth "boiling". If it doesn't have the impurities to promote the boiling, then it will superheat. When it gets to that condition, the first disturbance causes one instantaneous burp that can splash water.

The old wives tale rings true.

I learned all about it from an Engineer that was working on a sulfuric acid reclaim station. He learned all about it when the station exploded spraying 100 gallons of 100% sulfuric acid all over the place.

It's also called "flash boiling", is usually happens when a fork or stirstick is places in a cup of water right out of the microwave. Once the surface tension is broken, the water will "flash boil", or boil so fast it shoots up out of the container.

LOL..... well this thread is different. Happy new microwave, Beetle...

We have just recently replaced ours for another combination microwave/convection oven, which I think are the best kind. This is our third combo and now I wouldn't go back to an ordinary microwave....
