Laptop network card to dsl connection?
« on: December 27, 2002, 02:18:59 AM »
Hi

I'm total newbie what comes to network cards, but I thought that as I have work laptop (Compaq Evo 1000V with 2.2 GHz 512MB & Ati Mobility Radeon), which would give better fps than my home pc (933 MHz 512MB & GF2), could it be possible to use laptops internal 10/100 network card with my home ADSL connection? I have internal DSL card in my home pc. I already tried to connect ADSL cable to my laptop, but I didn't dare to try change any settings. I have win xp pro in both pc's.

Thanks!

Sure you can use your Laptop 10/100 lan connector IF you have external ADSL modem.

"I already tried to connect ADSL cable to my laptop,..."

What is this ADSL-cable? Do mean phone cable and you plug it in to the laptop inbuild modem? This or that, you need extrenal DSL modem with hub or switch.

I connected my home ADSL cable into my laptops NIC input (is same connector). I know I can connect my laptop with external dsl modem, but I don't have one and I'm not willing to buy one as I just bought my internal dsl card to my home pc ( I should have looked in to future and bought external instead, doh!). So you think it's not possible to connect via laptops internal card?
How about this one then;
I have internal 56kbs modem too in my laptop, is it possible to connect to internet with it via my home adsl connection?
Yeah, I know, this sounds desperate enough already :)

If you have a 10/100 network adapter in the PC you can connect the two with a crossover cable and then run some Internet Connection Sharing software.  Microsoft's ICS comes as an installable componant with 2000 & XP, IIRC.

I never even heard of an internal DSL modem.  I believe you should be able to install another NIC PCI card in you home pc and connect it to your laptop using the Network Wizard in XP.  You will need another cable also. I am sure that if you buy the card and cable at a good computer store they can explain what you need to set it up.

Buy an external ADSL-modem: With less than 150€ you can get one wich also works as a switching hub with 4-5 x 100mbps ports.
Then you don't have to keep your router-PC on when playing games or surfing in the net.

My old System, Now I'm using XP2400 CPU and little other stuff has changed too. Nokia M1122 is connecting laptop and 10/100 switching hub to the Web and two other computers are connected to switch. Works like a dream.

I have Roadrunner 10 internal ADSL card in my home pc.

Yes Staga, buying an external modem would be the answer, but as I said, I just bought this Roadrunner.
Well, perhaps I should try to connect to internet via my home pc with suitable cable to connect my laptop. Got to check that out.

Thanks for everyone.

Yes janneh, connect the laptop to the pc.  You have to use a CROSSOVER cable though, not a standard network cable.

Staga:

Could you share ADSL bandwidth with Zyxel so, that every PC could only have certain maximum amount of bandwidth?
