Now how did this turn into a spaniards-bashing fest? I thought it began as a French-mocking thread! :)

Every country with power has had its share of atrocities, so let's not turn this into a "your culture is worse than my culture"... puhleeeze.

Likewise Dan, what Curval said. We were just playing and meant no offense against the Spanish. Hell, thanks to the historical promiscuity of Spanish women I hane a little German in me, a bit of French and a hell of a lot of unknown. LOL Believe me, I am no purebred. , didn't mean to diss the Spanish.

JBA - I said that the UK and Ireland shared a language, and that Germany & Austria shared a language. I did not say that all four countries share the same language!  The wording of your post led me to believe that you thought Germany & Austria spoke English as a first language - lol!

No. What I meant was that the World has learned English for a reason. They want to do business with the largest Economy in the world, send their kids to our schools, and come to our hospitals to learn, treat, or be treated. Or escape the oppressive taxation of the EU.
We don't need to learn other languages, unless it is out of sure desire, not a necessity. You live in area of the world the requires you to learn multi. Languages if you want to travel. But I'm sure your Businesses use English.
And your right about most Americans not traveling out of US, no need to, this country is so big it would take a lifetime to see it all. I’ve seen more of Europe then the US.
And before you get ahead of yourself with your Elitist "if you don't know two languages then your dumb crap". I'll say this, not that I need to, but my European Wife and I are multilingual, rearing multilingual kids.

P.S. Our law degress and PhD's make us over qualified to be "truck driving rednecks"

Yes, I notice that Americans are fond of quoting size. ;) They are fond of saying things like the UK being a "tiny little island", whereas it's actually quite a few islands which occupy an area about the size of Oregon. Funny how you never hear of Oregon described as a "tiny little state" - partly because it's the 11th largest state. Seems like there's a sense of proportion missing along the way. Jersey is the largest of 6 Channel Islands, and is only about 13 miles by 9 miles - now there's a tiny little island...

As for "not needing to leave the US", that's a superfluous statement. I don't "need" to leave Britain, and most Spaniards do not "need" to leave Spain. Most Indians never leave India. I feel that the reason that most Yanks never leave the US is because they don't get the sort of holiday or personal vacation entitlement that we get here in Europe. Most American firms have you working from 8am to make a 40 hour week, and offer paltry holiday entitlements of around 2 weeks per annum. I even knew someone who, on starting a new job, was entitled to only 1 week of personal leave. In Europe, most people get 4 weeks holiday or more, depending on seniority. And if you're doing serious travelling, you just wouldn't be able to do it with American levels of personal leave.  That's why so many of the Yanks seen in tourist traps in Britain are actually retirees.

Where is your wife from, JBA?

Hehe, the "truck driving redneck" quip seems to have found a target. :D

JBA, You edited your post, but not before I saw you refer to the French army as small and weak. For a moment, I thought you were talking about American coffee!  lol

I have no idea of the size of the French army. I suspect that like the Swiss Navy, it's as big as it has to be. I don't view France as a weak country. It is, after all, one of a relative handful of countries with a nuclear defence/deterrent, the others being the US, Britain, Russia, China (I think?), and Israel - although Israel doen't like it talked about and jailed a guy for about 15 years for doing just that. (Story here.)

This thread was not never about the French military. It was a thinly veiled attempt to elicit a few cheap laughs at the expense of the French military. In that sense, it seems to have been successful.

X2Lee Now now, I'm sure Beatle is LHAO at this, so no need to be nasty.

Oh, and Oregon IS a "tiny little State"... in fact we're made up of a whole BUNCH of "tiny little States"... almost 50 of em now.
