For help, the first two places to start are
http://www.hitechcreations.com/frameset1.html?helphom.html
then
http://www.netaces.org

There is a lot of other good info out there, but those two sites will cover most of the basics.

As for the joystick, it really depends on how much you're looking to spend.  For under $40, it's difficult to find a good joystick, though I'm sure someone here can pipe up with one they've had good luck with.  Whatever you get, the minimum requirements should be at least one POV hat, with throttle and rudder control.  I wouldn't reccomend trying to use anything less.

For about $50 you can get a thrustmaster afterburner, a pseudo-hotas stick.  It looks like a cheap plastic toy, but is incredi bly solidly built(mine lasted through well over 5000 hours  of use)  It has a twist on the joystick, and a "rocker" control on the throttle both of which can be used to control the rudder, and can be switched beteen the two with the flick of a switch.  This is the stick I'd reccomend if you're looking to get a reasonably priced joystick that'll last.

I bought a Thrustmaster Fox 2 Pro for around $30 bucks.. This stick has been the best stick i've ever had.  And i've had 4 different sticks...  Plus it was the cheapest stick i ever bought.

About joystick

I have use my Saitek X36 usb hotas few years now and Im happy with it. Of course many flight hours start seem but anyway I think I get big bang with prety low bucks.

To give your joystick longer life, dont bang & crunts it with heavy hand to limits all the time.

I also use a TM Fox Two Pro. Great stick (cost me 70-80$ canadian of course)

It has throttle, Rudder Twist stick (fighter jocks use that alot to line up shots), Hat Switch (essential for Air to air combat).

If you dont want to spend alot than go with a twist stick. It has everything you really need.

If you got plenty to spend then rudder pedals and Joystick (and maybe even a thottle) would be much better I think.

i use a ms sidewinder precision pro. it is the only stick i have ever owned. it performs all the tasks needed in any online game. i have had the stic for 4 years now going on 5. the only downside was that i paid 75 bucks for it. it should be a little cheaper by now good luck:)

I used a Saitek Cyborg 3D USB for some time. If you can afford a few pennies more, get yourself a Saitek X36 or X45.

Used millions of sticks from crappy bargain basement stuff in my Chuck Yeager days to something reasonable, and everything in between.

I live in the Netherlands, not much choice there if you want a good flightstick.

Basic requirements:

Fully programmable
View hat
Throttle
Twist (for rudder)

USB is also nice because under XP my game port won't work.

When I started to fly Jane's WWII fighters a while ago (it was already an old game by then) I bought a Logitech Wingman 3D. Nice and heavy, solidly built, good software.  This is the stick I started AH with. Sadly, after not even that much use the rolling axis became bad. Now I have a Logitech freedom 2.4 cordless. Nice smooth stick and unbelievably cool looking :D

Still, the best stick I ever used was the Gravis Phoenix. Big ugly, plastic, fully programmable thing with rudder, throttle and millions of buttons. Sadly the thing is ancient and the software is hopelessly outdated. Still, the smoothness and (adjustable) feel of that stick is second to none. If it would work with AH I'd still use it.

X45

If your just starting learning to fly a HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) will pay off alot. The x45 (or x36) allows you multiple hats and trimming on the throttle. Over the long haul it will more than pay for itself. Eventually if you want you can add pedals...but you can do everything you need with the X45.

WELCOME!!!!!!!

I personally have flown with the Microsoft Sidewinder series of sticks, having owned every version!  I like the twist on the stick as I do not like rudder pedals ( sit indian style while flying ).

I also use the CH Pro USB throttle for my other hand.  Now dont get me wrong this is not the cheapest way to go.  The MS Sidewinder series will do everything you need but as you progress you will find that you really want a progammable type of throttle or other device.  I used a MS Sidewinder Strategic Commander for my other hand prior to getting this throttle about a month ago.

Good luck and any info you need just ask!:)

OH By the way.....

If you need some help with the game just ask.  TIGER squadron guys are always willing to help out.  We fly as rooks so if you are another country please be sure to let us know where you are at and your CPID.  I'd be more than happy to go to the Dueling arena to show you the basics and other things you need to get you started up.

We were all new once!

Oh and for all you "Quotemasters"...LOL....I know whats gonna come now....
