I have a pal who works in the North West region of the Provicial Firearms office, attached to the Candian Firearms Center.

2 days to deadline, and they had another systems crash, a major one, in Marimichi yesterday.  Rumour has it up to 60% of the registrations so far may have been permanently lost or corrupted, including the backup systems.

LOL!

This happened a few years ago as well, that is why they sent out the "please re register your handguns with green cert cards" letter, they lost all of them and needed people to refile, so they'd have a least a clue of who had what.

If this is accurate, this WILL be the fatal blow to the system, there is no way they can afford to correct 60% system lost, much less do it in a few days.

If they were competent they would be much more frightening.

seems like if hackers wanted to be good guys for a change that they would have a perfect target here...  maybe those virus guys would be handy too.   You don't have to shoot people to revolt against tyranny.

Yep, peaceful non-compliance and civil disobedience works wonders.  And you don't need a firearm to do it.  :D

Would Canada be better off if gun owners don't comply?

Yes it would.

Do you think that the criminals that are currently having a running gun war in Toronto shooting each other dead every couple of days registered their guns?

A gun registry is the governments solution to violent crime. Go after law abideing citizens and gun owners because if you find any of them who mess up you can proscute them to the full extent of law (like speeders). However changing laws to proscute criminals more harshly who use firearms or illeaglly carry conceled guns, well that is just not the right thing to do for a wishy washy liberal man like our Prime Minister.

Heh computer systems usually don't crash without a reason.

And usually, backup data isn't lost *at the same time* without (probably the same) reason :D.

200 years ago, it was the gunslingers that held the power. Today, it's the geeky kids that weren't popular in school. I love it :).

I should say that the hackers I know are some of the most educated people I know, very literate, knowledgeable and quite obsessed with freedom of speech/information. Good guardians, IMHO.

Just getting an FAC, or PAL certificat as it is also known, is a totally ridiculous joke.
Sent my application in 4 weeks ago and wont hear anything for some time to come. As of Jan 1st my legal crimes are starting to climb.....Funny thing is the only thing I'm guilty of is being a Canadian Citizen Who once had an FAC many years ago and legally bought and owned a break action 12g and a Bolt action 22.

I guess I have to look at the advantages. Now that these weapons and my actions are deemed criminal, I can now look into knocking over convenience stores or banks as surely because they arent registered they must be used for violent crimes.

Civil disobedience in Canada means just one thing, They will need more holding facilities for these disloyal scumbag trash that dare question goverments right to impose anything upon the sheeplike populace.
And If Herr Jean Of the KDR (Kanadian Democratic Republic) Feels that His Gestapo...sorry...RCMP, arent tracking enough criminals down, He will Impose new laws so as spawn more criminals.

This Country shreckING SUCKS. We elect our Dictators and have no say in anything...Doesnt matter which party it is...They all have the same respect for the general populace...shreck us.
Oh yes...Raise the taxes so they can dole out more raises to politicians.

It's a property of an unlimited democracy to end up electing a dictatorship. Just an inevitable and spontaneous historical/social process, has nothing to do with people being bad or ill-meaning, quite the opposite.

Allegedely constitutional democracy with the right constitution separating state from religion and state from economy would work. But such an arrangement has not been tried yet.

Thats weird, I phoned asking for forms, and got them a week later, and received my PAL 3 weeks after I sent it in. This was back in October.  I really dont have a problem in a background check before you can purchase a firearm.  Bus drivers and Teachers all have to go through a check of thier own. I do have a problem with wasting 2 afternoons and a couple hundred bucks on a course and test that basicly mirrored my hunter safety course I took 10 years ago.

The registry on the otherhand, should just be scrapped before it costs us another billion dollars. I dont know what we got for all this money, my registration certificates are just photocopied pages that couldnt look more unprofessional if they tried. What a major screw up.  It probably ended up in Teflon Jean's retiremant fund.

I challenged the test and passed without taking the course.
the problem they are having now is an influx of applications and a cut in funding. Minimum 4 week backlog before they can even take a look at the applications now..this coming straight from the center and The MNR when I was talking to them.

I have passed security checks before as I have had some work in detention facilities.
You did well in applying early.  I just resent having to do this toejame when I had gone through this years previously...and registration of hunting weapons is bolshivik(ie. cow poopy)

The CFC and RCMP have been skipping that part of the application process for quite a while now.  Since 2000/early 2001, all they've had time for is a cursory CPIC check at best, and nothing more.

It's all case by case in terms of time for PAL processing, and right now is not a good example for obvious reasons.

But in 2001 I got my renewal very quickly, 3 weeks, while others I know still haven't gotten theirs from June this year.

The system is anything but efficient.

thrawn... why not do both?  or at least.... have the option for both..  IMO... guns are all about options in any case.   Those who wish to ban guns are all about destroying options.
