Question for anyone who spends alot of time in GV's

Is it common to have 75mm AP rounds bounce off an m3's hood at 700 yards?

Depends on the parameters of the shot. The effective thickness of an armor plate when struck by a projectile is the actual thickness divided by the cosine of the angle of impact (how far off perpendicular); for example, with an impact at 45° from perpendicular, the effective thickness is ~1.4x the actual thickness.

700 yards is a fairly close-range shot, so you've got a pretty flat trajectory; the hood of an M3 is at a pretty shallow angle, so the impact angle off the top of the hood is going to be pretty high, which cranks up the effective armor thickness. At that range, though, you should be able to adjust your aim enough to put a round through the front or side of the engine compartment, which would penetrate much better.

TPI

It's true if the angle of the hood was real flat compared to the shell's trajectory, the shell could bounce off it, like a stone skips on water.  Also, seven hundred yards isn't real far, but it's not point blank, either.

I thought it was funny as hell and was wondering if it happens often. I guess I should start taking a few HE rounds with me.

Consider net lag also when you see weird stuff.
I've hit M3's, M16's, M8's, and Ostwinds with both AP and HE shell from the Tiger's 88mm main gun and they just kept driving without any damage.  You can usually check your net status when you see strange stuff like that and find the cause.
Weirdest one was 15 HE shells into an Ostwind's turret at 57 yards and he turned around and drove away, after detracking me, of course.................:p

Realisticly .. NOT A CHANCE !!!

Here .. "virtually" anything is possible. Chances are you will see less of this than you will see more of it, so just shrug it off and keep on shootin'.

I was in a Tiger the other day sitting on the spawn point (400 yds) and at times it took 2 or more 88mm shells to pop an M-3 or and M-16. I think HiTech has some tuning to do in this area, but overall, the Tiger KICKS SERIOUS ASS.

That's for sure! Yesterday I couldn't hit a thing as close as 1600yds in a Tiger. No hit sprites nothing, checked net stat and it seems I was having about a 30% packet loss. While I couldn't hit anything I was an easy target for others.

I am bending the ear of one of my ISP's tech < sic > reps now. Their first reaction, as always, was to deny any problems...screenshots of my traces are in the mail now to prove they have a problem, I'm not holding my breath though, it's SBC, the PacBell ISP, one of the worst I've ran into in my 10 years of  online play.

But I do get porn real fast ;)

The Tiger sure is fun! Getting one shot kills again is great!

Regarding the M3/M16 problem the poster has inquired about, an AP round is most effective when shot at either the tracks, wheels OR the drivers position, any other penetrating shot that doesn't hit anything vital will most likely just pass through the thin armor and out the other side causing very little damage.

Having AP rounds richocet off the halftracks only happens when the angle of impact permits it. I've manned the GV's in AH a lot in the past 2 years and I've seen this type of richocet only 2 times...it's rare but it does happen.

So true ...

But I was sitting, as I said, 400 yds off, and when they spawned, they were showing FULL FLANK ... can't get any better than that. :D

I had .. at last count 38 kills and ran out of ammo and got killed trying to leave the scene ...

Yeah, sometimes you just gotta scratch your head and accept that strange things happen on the net.

One thing I wish the Tiger had is a smoke canister launcher. It seems taahat the perk tag ganging happens to Tigers also, it's tough to 'runaway' when you can't blind your foe first.

I noticed this too while camping the a63-a1 spawn point the other day. I was up on the hill about 600-800 yards from the spawn pointed down facing the rear as they spawned. There were to other guys in tiger with me and we were vulching em good. I was pointed down so I couldn't elevete my gun high enough to hit to ones on the far end of the spawn point. I killed a few m16-m3's and they mostly took 2-3 ap rounds to kill. I thought that was odd where as most panzers poped w/ one hit.

an M16 spawned just to far for me to hit w/ my main gun so I ignored him. a few seconds later he killed my left track. I then hosed him with about 200 rounds from my pintle gun from above and behind him. Did no damage :(

You would think that amount of fire from that angle would atleast kill the turret gunner.

It was rather dissapointing to lose my track to an m-16 that was below and infront of me. Cause I couldn't land the 30+ kills I got in my tiger.

Was a load of fun though :)

The absolute best way to kill an M3/M16/M8 is to land an HE shell next to them.  Using this method is almost 100% effective in the Tiger and Panzer of getting a one shot kill.  From my experience it usually takes 2-3 rounds if you hit them directly.  If you only have AP rounds then it is best to aim for the wheels and tracks if they are moving or the driver if they are sitting still.

As of late I have noticed several times where it seems like no matter where I aim, my round passes straight through the target vehicle with no damage or hit sprite.  By accident I found that turning the turret until they are out of view then turning back again seemed to "resolidify" them and I could attain hits.
