...my elbows hurt.

A few months or so ago, Creamo posted a  thread about Medieval:Total War. The pic he showed looked interesting and some of the posts in the thread from those who knew about the Total War series intrigued me, so I asked for the game for Christmas.

Man what a captivating game. Been proppin' on my elbows so much, they're sore. Need me one of them donut seats too.

Man I've been playing that almost non-stop since it first came out......bought 3 extra copies for skinflint mates who just HAD to try it and got them addicted as well.  Now I've taken to editing loadsa stuff to extend the game.

However, I got myself a copy of "Hearts of Iron" last week (not available in USA or UK yet but is available over Kazaa - I'll buy it when it comes out it's sooo damn good) and M:TW has a serious contender for my time here.

HoL simulates WW2 (ALL of WW2, every sq inch of it) from 1936 to 1948, the game is a mix of turn based and real time......well ok it's a turn based game but the clock moves forward in real time, you can pause at any time and have a fast forward button for the boring bits......but get this:  The clock advances in HOURS not days or months.  And what's more, you can play as ANY country on the face of the Earth.

I'm playing Europa Universalis II at the moment Swoop - I got it on Kazaa, but will probably buy it when I get chance. It's by the same people who did Hearts of Iron (which I have and will tackle when I get time). It runs from 1419 to 1820 and the scope and depth is amazing. The economy/diplomatic model is the most detailed I've seen in any game. The graphics are nice too.

I started playing as the Muskovy kingdom (which starts as Moscow and a few hundred kms around it). Being landlocked with an unclaimed province to the north, I needed to access to the sea - which would allow me to start colonising and protect my northern border. Fortunately, the neighbouring kingdom of Novgorod was suitably placed and ripe for conquering. My superior forces overcame their armies after a series of battles and sieges and I forced them to become my vassal, whilst giving up their provinces and trading posts  (effectively they are controlled by me).

This increased my 'bad boy' rating with other nations, especially those sharing the same religion (Orthodox Christianity). Novgorod had been Orthodox too. So now I have to persuade my neighbours that I wasn't such an Imperialist tyrant and gain their trust again. You can do this by arranging royal weddings, guaranteeing their independence or by giving them monetary gifts. Eventually, you can form alliances if your relationship is good enough with them. From what I can see, I'm going to need them as buffers against the Mongol hordes to the South and East - which aren't going to be too pleased when I tell them I'm no longer going to be their vassal; they currently take half of my provincial tax income.

By this point it was 1.30 am in the morning and I had to be at work for 6am. It's truly an addictive game. :)

It's quite interesting how fractionated Europe was in the middle ages - there were scores of kingdoms and most of them I've never heard of.

HoI seems more combat orientated from what I can see.

I recommend it mrfish. Hortlund's the expert if you have any problems.

My earlier plans of expansion came to nothing. Very soon after I took Novgorod and the province with access to the sea, one of the weirdest alliances possible declared war on me - England, the Teutonic Knights and Burgundy! Everything was quiet for about six months after the declaration of war and then suddenly a large army from England and Burgundy landed at my port. Since England was a super-power in those days, her forces kicked mine back to Moscow and I lost everything gained in the previous years. This also left an English colony right on my doorstep. Seeing my weakened state, the other Orthodox Christianity states around me (whom I was not popular with for annexing Novgorad) sent huge forces into the Moscow Province and that East of it. Within a year I'd lost everything.

Such is life in feudal Europe. :)

So I started again, but decided to be more of a diplomat. By building a stronger economy, and giving gifts to neighbouring states, I soon had 3 other nations as Vassals (one of which was a breakaway from the Mongol Golden Hordes). I also got well in with Novgorad and Lithuania - I was Mr. Nice Guy - and I was about to liberate the Orthodox Christian world from the unwashed Tartars. I left Psycho (I'm sure that's the right spelling ;)) as an enemy, since Novgorad had just had a huge 4 year long war with them, however. So I form an alliance with my 3 vassals and get ready to declare war on the Mongols, when low and behold Psycho declares war on me! Bloody stupid move, because I call on my recently formed Alliance to join me in crushing them. Within 2 years Pyscho is an annexed land and a distant memory as an independent state.

Now I'm going to hit the Tartars and start to build a greater Russia. :) Fortunately, the Crimea and Ukraine have just rebelled against them and rebels are torching Mongol citadels all over the shop. Divide and conquer. Crimea and Ukraine have started a war of their own barely nine months after gaining independence, so they won't be interfering in my expansionist plans.

Download it from Kazaa like I did - it was only 48 Mb.

I'm buying it today for the manual alone. :)
