should i update my BIOS??? (pls i need help)
« on: January 04, 2003, 11:17:49 PM »
i just installed an extra 256 mb (pc 133 but also works on pc100/66 socket) of ram (which supposed to total to 512 from original 256).  after i installed it a blue screen appeared and said that my BIOS doesnt support ACPI.

The blue screen have 2 options.....

1. one is to update my BIOS
2. disable ACPI (what the heck is that?????)

what should i do????? should i update my BIOS (my bios is HP Pavillion Cognag) or disable ACPI?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

my PC is HP Pavillion 6745C and i run it on windows XP PRO

the specs:

*celeron 700mhz
*256 pc100 ram (it was supposed to be 512 after i installed it)
*20 gig HD
*ATI radeon 7500 PCI
*AC 97 audio (onboard)

Some HPs require special memory. :(  I'd check somewhere like http://www.kingston.com and pull up with type of memory your system takes.  It should be SDRAM (PC100 or PC133 most likely), but recently I've seen some HP computers that do not take standard PC100 Sdram.

I would also use a program like memtest86 to test the memory to be sure it isn't bad.  (http://www.memtest86.com or .org if I remember right.)

You should definately not turn off ACPI!  Updating the bios would not be the first thing I would do either.  A bad stick of ram or the requirement for special HP configured ram would be my first guess.

It looks to me like special ram is required. :(

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=+9987+&distributor=0&submit1=Search

That "PVL" in the part code indicated Pavilion.  (If I remember right HP places a Serial EPROM on the ram that MUST be present for the ram to work in those systems.)

Rolleyes all you want... MrSid is pretty much right.

If you want to upgrade anything on that PC, you'll want to check the HP website first.  Quirks abound with their systems.

In the future, I'd avoid the HP, Compaq and IBM computer solutions.
