See if you can get the western digital drive with the 8 meg buffer instead of the 2 meg buffer.  All the hardware review sites rave about the 8 meg drives.

I endorse mwave big time.
And I concur on getting the 8MB buffer WD drives.  They are only like $10 more than the 2MB buffer drives at mwave.

The only question I'd have is if WinXP Pro supported multiple processors.

I'd suggest going with an RDRAM solution instead of PC2700.  RDRAM is still the best memory solution for the P4.  Coincidentally, that will change the MB.  Also, as was mentioned above, what exactly is your father going to need a maxed out P4 3.06 system for?  Unless he's a hardcore gamer, does a bucketload of digital video editing, or regularly compiles massive applications and renders huge animations, he simply doesn't need that kind of power.  Of course if he's the "gotta have the baddest boy on the block" type, then he's certainly getting it with this rig.

To answer another question, XP will indeed see multiple processors.  It sees the HT technology as 2 logical processors, and is able to utilize them as if they were actually 2 physical devices.

Oh ya i know its way to much  system for him!
In the future  he plans on doing some video editing and DVD type stuff.
The reason i'm building it for him is because if i didn't he'ld be dumb enough to goto GATWAY or DELL and spend  twice what it should cost! Not to mention it will be a system that will last him for the next several years (ild guess atleast 3yrs)
Aswell as when i go to visit him in NC ill have a machine that i can use instead of having to carry my system down with me!

I was gonna get that 8 mg buffer but i didnt think it would be that big of a deal not to mention this MOBO board has SATA on it so when the SATA drives come out ill hook him up with one of them!

BOX:D
what preformance gain would the 8mg buffer give?Ya he's that type "im the baddest boy on the block/all of lake Adger NC" not to many hicks there can even spell let alone use a computer!lol

I read a mobo review that stated that if you hook up a generic IDE drive to a SATA controller with the parallel-to-serial adaptor, you see increased performance.  I don't know if this was a real speedup or if there was something else going on, but they reported it.  Darned if I can remember the website though...

Watch it Boxboy, I live about 15 mins away from Lake Adger.
We aren't all illiterate down here and some of us even build computers. :D
Sounds like a killer system though. Good luck with it. Look me up if you are in the area sometime. Always a pleasure meeting fellow AH'ers.

Regards
