GOOD ANALOGY

A teenage girl was about to finish her first year of
college. She considered herself to be a very liberal
Democrat. Her father was a rather staunch Republican.
One day she was challenging him on his beliefs, and
his opposition to programs like welfare. He stopped
her with a question about how she was doing in school.

She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA but it was really
tough. She had to study all the time, never had time
to go out and party and got little sleep because all
of the studying. She didn't have time for a boyfriend
and didn't really have many college friends, because
of all her studying.

Her father then asked how her friend Mary, that was
attending the same college, was doing. She replied
that Mary was barely getting by. She had a 2.0 GPA,
never studied, and was at parties all the time. She
often wouldn't show up for classes because she was
hung over.

He then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the
Dean's office and ask them to take 1.0 off her 4.0 and
give it to her friend that only had a 2.0. That way
they would both have a 3.0 GPA. She fired back, "that
wouldn't be fair, I worked really hard for mine and my
friend has done nothing."

After a moment of silence, she replied, "I guess I
will never vote Democrat again."

Kinda sums it up.  Unfortunately the Republicans are socialists too.  Vote Libertarian.

That's not Democrat, that's Communist.  Now how about an analogy that differentiates it from Fascist and Socialist?

CAV - that analogy is way too simplistic. As a devil's advocate (I am really a libertarian) let me blow it to pieces as any smart liberal would.

What about the other TG's friend - say, Latifah.

Latifa is a very hardworking girl and studies even harder than TG and never puts out or drinks alcohol. In fact, the only time not studying is Sunday mornings when she goes to Church.

Unortunately, Latifa is rather dumb. It may be the result of her genetic composition or environmental causes - being raised in poor conditions by a single mother who was not really carefull during pregnancy with the use of various substances and did not care about good nutrition. She did not get to go to a good school and may have even been a victim of a racial discrimination. She may even be sick with asthma or something which distracts her from studies.

So doesn't that poor girl deserve an extra help in order to get into grad school and become a manager, a doctor or a lawyer? We don't even have to explicitely take a 1.0 off the TG to give to Latifah. Just make a system - call it Affirmative Action - where 2.0 GPA of Latifah's would be equal to 4.0 GPA of TG for college admission and employment purposes.

I mean, doesn't she deserve it somehow? Isn't it her right to be compensated for unfortunate conditions of her childhood or even wrongs done to her ancestors? Wouldn't it be to the benefit of the whole society if she can get a better job, make more money and contribute to the economy? How about divercity? Who wants only smart and knowlegeable running our government agencies, sports teams and performing surgery on our internals? Small negative effect on the economy if any will surely paid off somehow. Or at least we will feel better. Especially since it involves taxing and denying opportunity to rich and successfull.

Outside of education we would have to rely on radically progressive taxation and labor laws aimed at the same worthy goals.

Only a greedy republican or heartless libertarian would begruge such a nice girl some help.

with less gov't & taxes there would be more charity & scholarship money for Latifah Mikova (i gave her a last name to make it more realistic), more, in fact than just the missing taxes, as taxation is the biggest economic sinkhole there is. there would also be more jobs for her when she gets out of school and those jobs would pay better

"What about the notion that affirmative action has helped blacks rise out of poverty? The black poverty rate was cut in half before affirmative action -- and has barely changed since then." --
 Thomas Sowell

T.S. is black scholar who happens to be one of the most brilliant minds of our generation - and an economist at that - who believes that if something was working, there was no need to screw it up.

The fact that I laught at the liberal program intended to help Latifah does not mean that my program would not offer Latifah even more benefit - an real at that. Being subject to impersonal market forces ratehr than arbitrary human decisions, the system allowed greatest freedom leading to most opportunity and prosperity, "rising tide lifts all the boats" - this kind of stuff.

I am all for helping people - privately - as much help as they can absorb. So a bright kid would get help for advanced education while a dumb one will get help for job training. Economy not being a zero-sum game, all would benefit.
