Computer lock up
« on: January 12, 2003, 05:26:44 AM »
Need help.

After the latest update, my computer locks up after 5 minutes, when logging onto AH. I have to restart my computer each time.

I have a AMD 1800, 256 MB Ram, MSI G3Ti200 128 MB DDR Video card.

I have tried changing my AH video settings to all different configurations and still have the same problem.

Prior to the last update, my computer would lock up speratically and others told me that was normal. I do not think this normal.

Any suggestions?

Could be anything but I was getting lockups too after the last update. My advice would be to download the latest version from HTC, save your settings file, completely unistall AH and delete the HTC file on Programme Files. Clear out registry of HTC/AH if you really want to be thorough and reinstall AH. Then copy your settings file back.

I find that this is a good plan after a major AH update. Doesn't seem to matter so much after minor patches.

Let me know how you go. Good luck;)

OK, I will give it a try and wait the 1 1/2 hours to down load. I did install Direct X 9 just see if that helped and of coarse I loced up again :-(

Thanks for the advice, will let you know how it turns out.

Um no it's not normal for it to lock up, is it just AH that is causing this problem.  I had a problem once, turned out to be my dummy self Overclocking the video card.

FOGOLD, I'm just curious.  You wrote "Programme Files".  Is that how it is spelled in the Scottish (or UK) version of Windows?  Absolutley not flaming at all, just curious as to some of the differences in our common language.

Oh, and so this isn't a complete hijack...pbutler, what version of the OS are you running, and to what service pack level is it?  Have you done any major upgrades in the past that may be causing conflicts?

<~~had this trouble with a freind,,it turned out too be his sound card locking up his hole computer,,,i replaced everything in his computer,,thought it was his geforce 1 card,,,so we got a geforce 4,,ddr,,,,and put more memory in it,,,well after  afew min,,it would just lock up randomly,,,,after soaking that much money into it,,it turned out too be just the sound card the hole time

NOTE: In some cases, such as the C-Media chip or any onboard sound chip, random lockups and lost sounds seem to be normal<~~from skuzzy him self,,and i know its true,,because i seen it happen,,lol,,,so before you replace your 3d card,,,see if your sound card is the trouble<~~is it a turtle beach montago?,,thats what my buddy had,,,we had to junk it,,i put a  sound blaster live in it,,all lock ups are gone now,,hope that helps you:)

OK did the whole down load again and the thing locked after only two minutes if that long. I have a Sound Blaster sound card, brand new as well as the video card.

Will delete and down load one more time, mabey the DL was corrupted. I have been experiencing connection drops with current DSL ISP.
Any other suggestions?
Appreciate the support.

Hmmm. I had the exact same problem about a year ago. Would play fine for  any where from 5 min to 30 minutes and then lock up. Ended up reinstalling windows, on advice from (?cant remember who now), but it did fix the problem. Hope you find the solution.

I had trouble with lockups once. I had overridden the default refresh rate setting in Direct-X to  85. Couldn't get to the bottom of it. Reset the DX setting to default and it cured the problem.

I presume you've tried the usual latest drivers, no IRQ conflicts etc etc?

What version of Windows?

OK something that I noticed, when I start up my computer it reads the following..."EMM 386         Not Instsalled. Unable to set page frame base address."

Is this someting in the CMOS? If so, how do I change?

I did do the DL for a second time and this time it came up with the new down load, seeing how I had to copy over the setting files to get all my joy stick setttings back. That was a very important suggestion to save setting file. Fourtunately I saved the terrains file as well, but didn't think about the sound file:eek:

Anyway, The thing still locks up. I went back and reinstalled the sound card drivers to see if that would help, but did not.

I tried to fly off line and was able to fly longer then five minutes.

FYI, I am only experiencing this in AH. All other programs and games i have work fine. But then AH is really all I have that would be demanding of a high end VID card.

I am using 98SE as OS. Have done some updates but really couldn't tell you all of them. Is there a log kept somewhere in my system that I could access?

All Advice is appreciated and used.

what kinda sound card is it?,,how old?,,,lots of lock ups are because of bad sound cards and vid cards,,,,does it have c-media chip on the sound card?,,if so,,it will lock up at random,,somtimes let you play 5 min,,30min,,,somtimes a few seconts,,lol<~~sound like the same problem? some sound cards are just out of date,,and if its on board sound,,even worse,,lol
