XP keeps crashing.
« on: January 12, 2003, 04:12:40 PM »
Grrr...

ABit VP6 (latest BIOS), 1 GB PC133 RAM, 3Com 3c905, Geforce 4 4200, SB Live! Windows XP SP1. HDDs are mirrorred on the onboard HPT370. The d*mn thing crashes every time I run a 3d app. This would tend to point to the graphics card, but I've tried allsorts of drivers with no improvement. I've checked the BIOS and AGP 4x is disabled. The GPU fan is working fine. I've even tried with a bare install of XP and AH and Cougar s/w.

Grrr...

Anmyone got any ideas?

[Edit]

The PC freezes solid, at random points. I can be in the air for 30s or 5 mins. No BSOD, just a freeze

If you're overclocking anything, that would be the first place I'd look.  It sounds like either your vid card doesn't like a device its sharing an IRQ with or its overheating.

I appear to have found the problem: the fan on the Gf4200 keeps stopping. Intermittently (but more off than on).

Grrr...

I've recently read an article about huge failure rate with 4200's. Buy cheap, expect cheap. :)
