That's not the problem.  This guy was a coward and set these people free on his way out.  If he had really believed in this concept, he would have made that move the first day he took office.

Sure killing innocent people is a terrible thing, but that doesn't mean that you go and put a moratorium on ALL capital punishment.

The Governor was and still is a proponent of the death penalty. The systm in Illinois is horribly broken, and too many innocent people have been placed on death row. He did the right thing. He didn't have time left in office to "look at each case", and he couldn't trust his successor to do it.

Moratorium?  I dunno if that is necessarily what it is.

I heard on the radio today that Illinois has recently found 17 people to be innocent of the crimes they were sentanced to death for.  The Governer actually makes quite a bit of sense when he admits that the system was too flawed when these individuals were sentanced to fairly decide on each and every individual criminal on death row... so they cleared it out.

It seems that Illinois may be required to be the trend setters for a better system when it comes to the death penalty.  Until people realize that politics and convictions should not be co-supportive, this will continue to be a problem.

This is this heart of the issue.

DNA evidence and finger print evidence must be reviewed before executing any more death row inmates.

I forget the name of the new Ill Gov, but I heard on the radio this morning that he said one of the first things he's going to do upon entering office is to end the moratorium on capital punishment.

I wasn't aware of the full facts, if 17 people out of like 160 or so were innocent than I'd have to agree with the decision to release them all.  However, I would attach that decision to strong actions to fix the system that put those 17 people there in the first place.

You don't just release them ie change their sentence .. that is what appeals are for

if the system was SO screwed up, then the lawyers would have had a field day representing the clients while raking in your tax dollars doing so

this guy did it for the headlines and to divert attention away from his other troubles

I don't know what you based this post on.  But as a resident of Illinois and a person that has been following this issue, I can say with complete confidence that you don't know the facts here.

The Illinois Death Row problem that has been brought up reflected a small minority of offenders.  True that those few were tragic mis-uses of justice, however the majority of the offenders that Ryan granted clemency Are guilty with Overwhelming evidence to include DNA confirmation of their crimes.  Why should any Taxpayer be forced to feed, cloth and maintain a shelter for these Insects? There are certain crimes that should carry swift and permanent punishment.  These people should not be breathing, and Ryan has abused his power and forced them on Illinois Taxpayer's for the remainder of their lives. I am not a big fan of Blegojwich (spelling?) but he would have to try very hard to equal Ryan's Corruption, and mis-use of power.

here's a couple of lovely's now set to live out their existence on your nickel:

Henry Brisbon is known in criminal justice circles as the "I-57 Killer" for a series of slayings in 1973 along Interstate 57 south of Chicago, including ordering one engaged couple to "kiss their last kiss" while he shot them to death alongside the highway.

Jacqueline Williams is a woman so desperate to have people think she gave birth to a baby that she, her boyfriend and a friend killed a pregnant woman and cut her full-term fetus from her womb.

Leonard Kidd, who caused a 1980 fire in Chicago that killed 10 children

Anthony Enis, who raped a nurse in 1987 and killed her four months later to keep her from testifying against him

Jeffrey Rissley, who kidnapped and killed a 6-year-old girl in 1991, disposing of her body in Michigan.

Daniel Edwards, who is on death row for the abduction-murder of Steve Small. Small, the publisher of the Kankakee Journal, was lured to the garage of a home he was renovating, stuffed into the trunk of a car and then buried alive. He died before police could find him.

and he had since 2000 to work on this, instead a just throws out a last minute clinton-style pardon and walks away from it ....

Please stay off my side.  Clinton did nothing more or less then Papa Bush, Reagan, Nixon, Ford, or Eisenhower.   Ryan is a Republican.  You should be sticking up for him.   Even if he did set free Murders, Rapists, and Child Molesters that we in Illinois are forced to support.  This is a clear example of the Hipocracy, and the dirty dealing that infests American Politics.  Ryan will do time I think.  Not for this although I think he deserve to.  He will do time for the money laundering and racketeering he has done.  This is only a Cheap and Low down attempt to divert attention from what will be a national trial of a State's Govenor.
