We need better engine sounds

I'm not talking individual plane engines, I'm talking about the sound the engine makes in a dive.  As it stands, it is dificult to tell the difference between 200mph and 450mph.  In a 500mph dive the engine should be screaming.  I would just like to see more aural information about the speed of my plane.  The wind isn't enough for me.  When my plane is about to tear apart I want it to sound like my plane is about to tear apart.

Then, perhaps, it is not the engine that makes the sound of which I speak.  But when a plane enters into a dive there is an audible pitch that gets louder and higher in pitch until it is a scream.  Is this air buffeting against the airframe?  I thought it was the propeller turning faster that it is supposed to, or the engine being forced faster.  Whatever it is, it is a clue as to your dive speed which is hard to guage on a flat screen.

You never watched any war movies Funked? The same ones where you could plant nice, neet rows of corn after they straifed the ground.   Guess thats where. Hollywood is never wrong.

You may be going at somewhat the same rpm but the actual load on the engine will greatly change the tonal qualities of the exhaust. Try going uphill and downhill in your car at the same rpm.

Geeze the F4U's were notorious for their sceaming in a dive.

Also props sound different over different loads anyway. The Hamilton Standards made that icky "popping" sound under high RPM/low speed (such as take-off and accelerating, etc) when the prop wasn't biting.

The F4u is the only fighter that I'm aware of that would make a whistling noise.  This was due to the air passing through the carberator inlets in the wingroots.  Other that that the only whistling noises would be due to air rushing over the cockpit hood etc.  Most WWII fighters had constant speed props (all but a few early Hurricanes as far as I'm aware of).  This means that other than the engine being under a heavier load while climbing the pitch wouldn't change much.  (You could possibly overspeed the engine though.  This would be when the prop was unable to maintain its RPM setting for some reason.)

That high pitched whine you hear when a plane is diving is the propeller tips going Mach. This takes some of the pulling power from the prop cause of the little bubble of air around the tips. Any plane will scream or whine in a dive if you get it going fast enough.

i've been to airshows as well as many of us.
i've taken rides in several WWII aircraft.
last airshow i was at there were several T-6'S there. pilot told me they all has the constant speed props. but there was a very noticable sound change when they were flying there formation loops and other mnanuvers.
i believe this is what he is refering to.
every plane i've ever been in made a very different sound when you went into a dive.
if you dont thing planes make different noises when they dive watch some of the reno air races films from the cockpits of the 51 they race there.

While on the subject of sounds. Does it bother anyone else that the gun sounds fade in? Firing the guns in an M16 doesn't sound like firing at all; it sounds like a bad movie. 2-3 seconds after you start shooting the gun sounds are at full; they should just explode in your ears like the real thing when you fire.

More annoying than anything else.

And I have to agree; the engine sound should vary with speed. Wouldn't be a bad thing to have 2 seperate sounds for the engine; one for liquid-cooled and one for radials.

Hey Rust you are thinking of the old ww1 bi-planes with the piano wire running between the two wings at high speed the wires would wibrate at such a freq. to make the sounds that you are thinking of.

The wining in the F4u was not from the carb but from the air flowing through the oil cooler.That was the noise that the enemies heard.

Whereas in Aces High, the whining in the F4u comes from the pilot when he sees a 190 behind him
