audie Murphy.   No doubt.   He couldn't even live with himself.   People say that when he got mad the look he gave would make your blood go cold.

Robert conrad is second... Takes a real man to shoot down all those zeroes in a -4 Corsair.

Murphy is in my book, but 'toughest' is impossible to really rank. I mean, does this mean it's ok to piss of James Coburn? I don't think so. :)

I'll tell you one thing - I learned about Audie Murphy from my Dad and his Friends as a kid. I always pause in shock for a moment or two when I'm talking to some sub-30 year old in the U.S. military who doesn't know who he was.

For those of you not from the U.S.A., he's the classic American 'storybook hero', but in his case it's all real - a little guy from Texas, who wanted to fight the enemy face to face. He was 'too small' though - the USMC and USN both turned him down because of size (they were following standard guidelines) and in the USA (U.S. Army) they at first put him in a supply unit. His first CO also though him too small for combat duty, but finally relented after repeated nagging by Murphy (must be distantly related to lazs2 ehehheheh - inside joke there) he finally got posted as a replacement to a USA infantry unit (USA infantry was taking alot of losses at the time).

And he went on to become the most decorated guy in WW2...who insisted that there were guys just as brave as him that didn't survive to get the medals he did. A real class act.

Here's a short bio (imdb.com):

http://us.imdb.com/Bio?Murphy,%20Audie

'At Arlington Cemetery, the tombstones of Medal of Honor winners are normally decorated in gold leaf, but Murphy requested that his tombstone remain plain and inconspicous.'

"I never liked being called the 'most decorated' soldier. There were so many guys who should have gotten medals and never did--guys who were killed."

I highly recommend reading and seeing 'To Hell and Back' if you haven't already.

To Hell and Back is one of my all time favorite WWII movies!

I wish I could get it and Battle of the Bulge on DVD.
I have been reborn a new man!

Notice I never said a better man.

I'm surprise no one has mentioned Burt Lancaster.  He did most of his own stunts I believe.
