looks like a dornier do17 with the rear cockpit canopy released and carried off in the slipstream.(this was how gunners evacuated this plane i think)

I must admit the tail does look a little unusual though.
with those striped lines it would appear it is some sort of test bed aircraft.perhaps one used to test the ejector seat? looks like the canopy, or whatever it is, is very high so maybe its an ejector seat body?

couldnt find any info concerning do 17s used for this but there were plenty of versions including pathfinder and larger engined experimental prototypes.

Maybe this is a picture of a test gone wrong with the crew about to bail out?

It is a He217 doing ejection seat testing. in mid 1944. It is WNr 190113.

EDIT: He219 for sure:o - check out the WNr. The name of the live "dummy" was Wilhelm Buss.

Heinkel HE-219 UHU Nightfighter.

Not a DO-17 or 217. Notice points on the rear of the engine nacelles. I believe I read that the 219 was one of the first planes with an ejection seat.

...i think the 1st ever use of an ejection seat was from an He 280, but not sure if He 280 was 1st plane fitted w/ one...He219 was a major arnold kicking machine, i think it was the fastest nightfighter of WWII & very heavily armed; up to 4 x 20mm + 2 x 30mm + Schräge Musik. i read in a book by a RAF nightfighter R/O who encountered an He219 in his Mossie XXX & the 219 easily outran them...maybe not so much use out it in AH - i dont think bomber version was ever produced & probably not as nimble as 110G

So they had ejection seat from factory? Could be fun when HTC will model this thing.

IIRC the first production AC with an Ejection seat was the He162, it used a 20mm shell to push the seat out and past the top center mounted jet.

First aircraft to carry an ejection seat was Heinkel 280.

Likewise the first ejection was done from Heinkel 280.

First aircraft in serial production with ejection seat was - tadaa - Heinkel 219.

Later at least Heinkel 162 and Dornier Do 315 were equipped with ejection seats.

Meanwhile a Swedish plane design was also equipped with ejection seat but I just don't remember what type it was. 1944 or 1945 anyway.

The He219 used compressed air for the ejection piston. Was not to good as any pressure loss meant a botched ejection.

The Fw190 used a 20mm to release the canopy from the a/c.

It was acctually a bording seat.
They used a 30mm schlag music to open up the belly of a lanc then they sent a Waffen SS grenadier into the hole using that seat.
Never used operationally.
