Q:mute
« on: January 16, 2003, 10:20:09 PM »
hi,

if all the time "mute dictionary is worked", and dont give post abuse word , why he mute without warrning?

If somone go to far, dictionary block him without warrning, and mute for 10 minutes.
But if noone was abused, and u dont wonna do this next time.
In heat of fight he type abused word once, even by accident, and was muted? /som ppls with low knowledge of english lanuguage, like me, somtimes was catch on that, and spanked/

imho not fair

why this system works like that?

best regards

ramzey

as i know "bastard" - polish "drań" mean "bad person" is only little abuse , not like M*F* or D*S*. Its old fasion word in polish

In the US (english language) Bastard is...

bas·tard
noun
1. A child born out of wedlock.
2. Something that is of irregular, inferior, or dubious origin.
3. Slang. A person, especially one who is held to be mean or disagreeable. [/i]

adjective
1. Born of unwed parents; illegitimate.
2. Not genuine; spurious: a bastard style of architecture.
3. Resembling a known kind or species but not truly such.

I would guess that you were using the term as a noun in definition number 3 (italics). In this case, your use of the term is technically correct, as in the actions of the person who rammed you were disagreeable, at least to you.

It is possible that the moderator, in his infinite and all knowing wisdom  was assuming that you were using the term in definition 1, which would be derogatory towards the other player in that you have no idea if he was born out of wedlock, thus making your statement inflamatory and uncalled for.

I cases like this, it would have been better for the moderator to ask you to refrain from such language in the future and take into consideration the multi-cultural diversity that is Aces High. There needs to be a greater latitude in what people say and how certain terms may be inturpreted by others.

Midnight ... I would assume that the word "bastard" would be in the auto-mute table and not left up to the discretion of a moderator. I think that is why ramzey he got muted without warning.

I believe that moderators should be looking at conversations as a whole and not just specific words. HT's "auto-mute table" can handle that.

With that said, it appears that the moderator did not look at Octavius's complete conversation, but rather saw his text referring to "arse"this and "arse"that. If HTC allows people to create such handles, then referring to them should not be a mutable offense.

Yeah, I know... I was bored.

I've been practicing debating skills, so that kind of over detailed and long winded explination is becoming second nature.

Gotta say I don't like this muting nonsense one bit. One of the main reasons I closed my account. Don't like the idea of some guy hiding behind a PC muting me for no reason at all....

Forget it guys, it's within the american state of mind already to accept the fact that double standard IS the standard.

There's a huge list of common life words and expressions that can never be broadcasted on tv or radio, much as it's allowed to show a womans breast if only the nipple is blocked out. The logical assumption would be then that the breasts are ok to see without nipples. :) It's only logical that this censorship is extended to online world.

It's their way of living (although it doesn't quite match the idea of 'freedom' to me..) so if you want to play their game you have to adjust.
