Wasn't Detroit the setting for the "Robocop" films because it lended itself to being a cesspool of crime and immorality in a city rotting away in its own industrial pollution and empty warehouses?

I'm looking through the site now.  The Studebaker site might make for interesting apartment complexes, depending on the surrounding neighborhood, if the money was there to correct the roof and renovate the interior.  The exterior design is certainly more appealing than the Motor City Industrial Park site (the enormity of which is quite staggering). The Rouge complex deserves to be torn asunder, if for no other reason than as a big step in cleaning up the river.

What was Hudson's?  A department store, or was it related to the Hudson automobile somehow?

I remember the "Kentucky Fried Movie" where they sentanced a guard to "Detroit" for failing in his duties.  They just killed the other two, but wanted to make a special point with this one.

Yes, it's sad to see the decline of Detroit.  I'm only 21, so it's been failing for as long as I can remember.  But I always feel proud when I hear about how it's contributed to American society.  Unfortunately, I still don't feel safe down there.  I have cop friends who absolutely refuse to go down there... even in the good sections near the waterfront and stadiums.

I hope that someday it can turn itself around.

And yes, Robocop was set in Detroit.  Draw whatever conclusion you want from that.

Good site though.  Lots of cool historic buildings in Detroit.  Too bad they're now just monuments to urban decay.

Edit:  Hudson's was the main upper-end department store in the Detroit area (don't know what other regions it covered).  I always thought it was a big chain.  It was bought by Marshall Field's a few years ago.  Their biggest, oldest store in downtown Detroit was imploded a few years ago with a lot of publicity.  It had been, for a long time, "the" reason to go shopping downtown (at least that's what my parents say).

I still have a lot of good memories there...

Everynow and then I read something in the paper about how the rock monsters are stealing the guardrails off of I-94 and selling them at scrap metal yards, or killing each other for $150 "felony shoes" or winter jackets, and I wonder why I occasionally miss that place.

I guess I'm just a homey. Thats why I named my boat "TigerTown." :)

No offense, but I think you might find worse if you look outside your borders.  Maybe look at Lagos, Nigeria, maybe some of the mean streets in cities in Africa.  How about a stroll down the street anywhere in the Ivory Coast?  Actually, you dont even need to go that far, would you dare walk alone through most of Mexico City?  How about, wander away from the main center of the tourist areas in Cancun?

Detroit, by US standards is not a garden spot, but when compared to many other places in the world, it is pretty close to a happy happy place.

No offense taken Dago, I agree with you.  There's definately worse.  It's just that it's not 10 miles from my house.  And sad to hear the stories from your relatives about how it was in the good ol' days, and then realize that there's not much of that good ol' stuff left for my generation.

But by 75 percent of the world's standards, Detroit probably ain't too bad.  There's food on the store shelves.

The Ultimate story happened in 2001 and I had tears coming down my eyes for almost 10 minutes.  Boss was pissed too, as I almost pissed my pants.  3 guys decided to try and steal a garage for aluminum siding.

Leeds? I didn't know there was a Leeds in the US. I live about 30 mins away from it - it's crap. I hope they made a better job of it in the US.

I know what happened in Detroit in 1967.  And in 1943.  Unfortunately, the de facto solution to those race riots was white flight, leaving detroit around 80 percent black.  It's just been left to rot as the suburbs flourish.

That's what's sad.  Not saying that modern Detroit is that much worse than other cities, in the US or elsewhere.
