Axis vs Allied arena...
« on: July 24, 2000, 04:17:00 AM »
Hi all.

For some time now WBs have an WWII arena, and it seems to be an complete success over there. They got more numbers in the WWII arena then in the main arena....

My question why dont we have the same here? I think we got support from both the axis pilots and the allied pilots in AH for this...

Regards.

WB's WWII Arena is proving to me what i have suspected for a long time:

The overwhelming majority of Online Air Combat game-players couldn't give a hoot-in-hell about "realism".  "Strategy" is merely using whatever "gaming-the-game" tactics are necessary to acheive "victory".  Regardless of simulating anything remotely resembling anything that happened in WWII.

These "sim pilots" will fly a conglomeration of "uber" aircraft from whatever nation/manufacturer and use numerical advantage to crush any opposition.

Thus, we have "Reds", "Greens", "Rooks", "Bishops", ad nauseum.

All the discussion about Strat, Flight Models, and Historical Accuracy is laughable.  Except for "Special Historical Events", none of that matters very much.

Warbirds, Aces High, whatever, are silly little computer games to 90% of the players 90% of the time.

My 2c.

First, I haven't tried WB's WWII arena yet.
WB, even with it's 50 some a/c doesn't have enought modeled to really be fare. No heavy axis buffs and no allied transport for field capture. Allied have borrowed the ju52 and I heard talk of them using the 262 at the end of the rps.

AH has no axis buffs or transports.

When someone mentions "historical" setups to me, the first thing I think of is, I've seen the movie and already know who won the war. Without some sort of play balancing it won't be much fun from where I sit. The John Wayne types out number the bad guys.

Last nites WB WWII arena numbers 37 axis to 127 allied, yep sounds like a lot of fun, NOT.

why not try it?

Ask 1 of the CM's to setup SE-Arena for 2 sides (disable A1), give both sides Troop-Cariers, vehicles and bombers.

And see how it works out

Just a suggestion  .

My take, on reading AGW for about a week, on the WWII Arena is it's ripping the WB community apart more than anything else.
There are too many holes in the plane set here (and even in WB's and AW) that this won't work. Unless you have a FIGHTERS only WWII/Axes vs Allies arena.  Introduce the bombers and the side with the B17/B24's has them an overpowering advantage. Add in the  Me-262 later in the rotation and the side with those has an overpowering advantage.
Good concept. I've just never seen a good setup using existing resources available yet in any online sim.

Definately the buffs would ruin it. What you would need to do to put the ballence back in is create some Axis buffs. Even if it is a Japanese Emily, or some of the very limited produciton German big birds.

If we had some buffs like that, I'd be all for a axis and allies arena

Why is 37 to 127 NOT fun?  Being outnumbered is one of the challanges that makes a fun game.

Assuming this is tongue-in-cheek, but he means 37 in one arena, 127 in another.

What he meant is there were 37 LW pilots and 127 of Alled in ONE arena.

Personally, I would like an arena with "historically accurate" (whatever that may mean to you) opposing plane sets, two sides, no enemy icons, and stuff like that.  The old WB Histerical Arena was almost more fun that my old ticker could stand and I'd go back in a flash -- if it were an Aces High HA.

Buhdman:

Let me know if you can get numbers to fly in a HA arena here. Because that's certainly not the case in Warbirds, where only organized squad stuff brings in the numbers.

Vert and I are convinced that lack of ICONs is what hurts us most in the HA. That doesn't mean we will change it, because there are still some hard core gamers who prefer that type of challenge.  But if you can get a HA to work over here as a regular arena let me know the secret formula.

You need some kind of minimal icons at distance to give you info you would have in RL. The icons need to go away when you get close enough that current technology _can_ give you enough info to prosecute the engagement.

IMO, the WB HA had it backwards. No icon till you get REAL close, then icon. To me, exactly backwards.

Pyro and I have discussed this privately before. We cheerfully agreed to disagree.   No hard feelings.

I think a HA can work, with far less icon info. We need to experiment.
