you would think that they would have some sort of ranging sight on shore batteries too.

Agreed altho I have been very effective using my mouse pointer on ship and shore batteries. The thing with shore batteries tho is on long range shots the gun barrel blocks the view. So its impossible to hit at 75% to 100% of guns max range.

I think it's pretty hard to hit anything with a shore-batterie, you just have to guess the distance, or can you just pic a point on the map like on a ship-battery?

use the f8 view and tilt it so the barrel tip doesnt block the view of the target at extreme range.  Then use the joystick to correct for shell splashes [e.g. 100 up, 100 down etc.] while watching the range display in upper left corner.  Naturally you will be using extreme zoom while doing this

I use the cursor for the field gun, shore battery as my boresight, after tilting the guns modeled sight out of the way. Works very well for me, but that's just me.

Can you give more detail on this F8 stuff. I have heard this before and tried it but really didnt see the effectivness of it.  I hit F8 and have no clue what to do after that.

Maybe I don't have the key(s) mapped correctly ? I think I just dont understand the concept implementation.

Thanks ...

Once you hit f8 you can move your view around and it sticks.  Try it  in the tower view, hit f8 then use what you normally would use to look left or right (joystick hat or keypad).  Your view will pan to that side (or up or down) and just stay there.  I generally use the keypad to adjust my view then I use the pg up/down keys to move my sight up or down.  I do this in gvs also so that my range ladder is useful far past the 3.2k its calibrated for...altho the range is wrong it is still useful for seeing just how far I have moved the gun up or down.  This is also handy in conjunction with the arrow keys and page up/page down keys while shooting from cruiser guns or shore battery guns to get the barrel out of the way after you have zoomed in (move the barrel down then off to one side if needed).  You can then move the site up or down to use it or just use the mouse curser as your aimpoint.  Once your done or if you want to start over hit f1 (and then home if you want) and your back to the default view.
