Rome: Total War
« on: January 19, 2003, 12:58:10 PM »
I've enjoyed the Total War series a lot since buying Shogun:Total War Warlords edition quite some time ago and the next game in the series (apart from the add-on pack for Medieval:Total War) looks superb. They're using 3D models for the troops this time round which should enhance the overall immersion of the game even further. I held off buying the others in the series as I was'nt sure I'd like the squad level control as opposed to individual troops but they are a lot of fun. Take a look at these screenshots here

Wow! I love the idea of a Roman Total War.  Haven't bought the other games because I hated the poor quality unit bitmaps. This looks excellent.

Will need a monster machine tho.

Sling> It hasn't been released yet but it's based on Vikings and Celtic units. You can read more about it here

Dowding> I know what you mean, I did'nt buy Shogun when it first came out because I thought it looked a little odd but glad I did buy it eventually as the bitmaps don't really  look all that bad but I agree the 3d units will perhaps appeal to a wider market because it looks so good.

I bought medieval TW on saturday, i really like like this game.  I think it's much better than shogun TW, i've been playing it for most of the weekend.

I started off as england (why would i choose anyone else:) ) and i started attacking the french almost straight away.  I kicked France's arse and captured their king in a battle where i was outnumbered 2-1.  Luckily most of their army were peasents so i slaughtered them, i ransomed the French king for 10,000 gold- woohoo lotsa money!:)  He died 2 years later from natural causes and had no heir, i used the money to bribe the armies in the 2 provinces he had so i quickly conquered the whole of France.:) With lots of money to spare i bribed wales, scotland, sweden and norway to join my little Empire.

At this point i stopped attacking to consolidate my land and start building lots of stuff.  I built a nice fleet, trading with everyone and becoming very rich (i had over 60,000k in the bank) and feeling like i needed to conquer something so i wiped out the arogonese (SP?), they only had 3 provences so they got slaughtered.  My army is still pretty small with only about 2000 troops (not including the couple 100 at each provence) and with Germany having the largest army in the game i got a tad nervous.  I started building my army up and the damn alohameds (SP?) (they had conquered Spain) invaded me with loads of troops, i was crapping my pants.   I was waiting for them to trounce all over me when half of his army rebelled and they had a civil war lol.  They offered a truce immediately, naturally i told them to bugger off while i went on to conquer half of spain during their internal troubles.

Just when i think everything is going fine the damn danish invade Sweden Curse you!!!!  I thought it would be a nice battle with them because the line up was 300 for 180 my favour.  Alas!!!  every unit he had were cavalry and slaughtered my peasents and spearmen:.:(   I offered a truce to the alohameds (they accepted) and began building an expeditionary force to kill the danes.  I sent over a 1400 man army and annnhilated the poor little danes occupying sweden.:D   Feeling vengeful i invaded Denmark crushing their 300man army and they are currently holed up in their castle.  I was just about to slaughter them when the bloody pope sends me a message telling me to call of my troops, apperently i'm being evil by attacking a fellow christian nation.   Well they bloody started it!!!

Thats about as far as i've got, tomorrow i'm gonna be conquering denmark.  I couldn't give a damn what the pope thinks, those bloody Danes asked for it.

I'm really enjoying this game, I think i'll be playing it for quite some time.:)

Thrila,

I'll be visiting the Plymouth area on the 22nd.

Any good air or naval museums I should see?

Thx!

Hey Hortlund, you'd be interested in my EU2 game. It's 1600 and I'm playing Muscovy in the Grand Campaign. I've conquered my way down to the black sea, annexed syria, lebanon and a couple of provinces around there, founded a highly lucrative string of colonies/trading posts along the Western coast of Africa trading in slaves and ivory (making a fortune) and I've got a trading post in on the East coast of South America. My armies are very powerful, Sweden in on my Western border and must crapping themselves at the prospect of the mighty Russian Imperial Empire invading. They've just had a very bloody civil war after they annexed Denmark, and I have about 100,000 troops on the border just waiting to strike.

Buhahahahaha - my plans for global domination under Imperial Russia are coming to fruition! :D

Not surprisingly, most of Western Europe hates me, but my neighbours love me. England is a close friend after many tribute payments and France is neutral. All those crappy little wannabe states are quaking in their booties, and I think Lithuania will be the next on the target list after Sweden is mine.

Meanwhile, the desert expeditionary force in Africa is busy squashing 2 foot high pygmies with my bayonet tipped muskets, while they try to graze my soldier's shins with their dried grass and sharpened guarvehards. Soon they will all be slaves and I will be even more rich.

Imperial conquest is so much fun! :D

hehee, EU is a great stress reliever. Frustrated at work? Come home and conquer Europe, slaughter the heathens and tax your people mercilessly.

Glad to hear you have learned the ropes of EU. Sometime when the next EU2 patch arrives we should try a multiplayer. But right now EU2 MP is somewhat crash prone due to some bug that will be fixed in the next patch. Me as Sweden and you as Russia should be interesting, maybe we could find someone to play England and France too...

Personally I'm playing Hearts of Iron more and more now. With one of the user mods it is quite the challenge actually, and 1.03 (the BIG patch) is expected within 3 weeks.

Heh, in my game as Germany, I was foolish enough to attempt an invasion of Norway in late October. I ended up losing 5 German motorized and mountain divisions at the hands of two Norwegian infantry divisions. I had to force the German unit commander to commit seppuku after that disgrace.

Yeah, MP would be cool. I think I've learnt the ropes - at first I was too aggressive, and as a 3 province weak Muscovian power, that's not wise. But I restarted just using diplomacy. Within 10 years I had three vassals and within another 15 I had annexed them peacebly and was busy carving my way south through the Golden Horde to the Black Sea. My Bad Boy rating was at very bad for a while, but once I set up my colonies (including a centre of trade which no one else could trade in - perpetual monopoly on a 500 credit CoT!) I had 50 years of peace to get it back to 'respectable'. Now it's time for a little more war. :)

Sweden has the potential to crush Moscow in the early years - they just need to get access through Novgorod. :)

Haven't tried Heart of Iron yet. Looks excellent though.

Well HoL is good......but it's also not available in the UK yet.  Which means the only way to get it is to download a pirate copy.....which you cant apply patches to cos gamecopyworld only has the no-CD for v1.0.

And it's a seriously buggy piece of software unpatched.

I'll buy it when it comes out cos it's good enough unpatched to see it'll be a really cool game.  But the wait until March is a real pain.
