Author Topic: I got a problem (Read 1088 times)

Hoping someone can help me. Just today, I have these pop up adds that just appear on my display. Evidently it is some sort of sctript of proggram that is on my machine that allows this. I won't even have a browser runiing and IE popup windows will just initiate and display on my screen. I have deleted all the cookies on the machine, history and temp internet files. I have searched in task manager for all the processes running for a clue as to what is doing it. in anycase, can anyone shed some light on what is causing this and what I can do short of formatting my hard drive to get this to stop?

You use Ad-Aware?

Sounds like you may have some spyware on your system.
If you use Kazaa, there are some tricks to keeping it working while using Ad-Aware... Kazaa has spyware built in that it won't function without.

Anyway, that's a good place to start.

Is it the Windows Messenger? There was a thread earlier about it that had some links on how to disable it and even get rid of it. If it isn't, you might look for something to block pop ups.

get rid of messenger and use ad-aware. I did both of these and haven't seen one of those damn things in months.

Run MSCONFIG and see if something is loading when you boot.
You may have to go into the registry......down to a RUN directory under windows

Had same problem. Went to Lavasoft.com dloaded Adaware and got rid of the popup spyware.

I got problems fellas. I went and DL'ed Adware from lavasoft and scanned mny machine. It found loads of spyware and I deleted it all. Went to bed that night and when I awoke this morning, there were 16 ads staring me in the face on my display..the same ones that were there before. ran adware again and deleted them again. IE^ is NOT my default browser but these ads popup with it.

There has to be some soret of proggy that got inadvertantly installed on my machine that is creating this. I just need to figure it out and how to successfully delete it.

BTW, left the house to go to gym this afternoon, only to return and find 12 ads on my display, the same ones as before. Beware of stuf that may install on your machine at websites!

Did you try disabling Windows Messenger like Mathman and Mini D suggested? That'd be what I'd try next.

If that doesn't do it, I'd get Zonealarm (I'd recommend it even if you don't need it). For the first few days it's running, it will ask permission for every program to accesses the internet. Don't let anything access the internet if you don't know what it is and didn't tell it to access internet. Look for program filenames when ZA asks you if the program can access the internet, and try Googling them to find out if they're spyware, or just searching for them in Windows to figure out if you want them there. You should be able to find if it's a program on your computer that's getting these ads.

It's a roundabout way of doing it, but i don't see why it won't work.

http://www.zonelabs.com is the place to get zonealarm. They have a pro version and a free one... the free one will work just fine for what you need ammo.

Methinks something booting up when you post your computer. I remember saying that you use win98. If so you can do this at startup to disable anything that you don't want to boot when you post your PC.

When you start PC. Select run.......in the textbox type in msconfig. You will get a binder of folders. On the far right of this binder is the start tab. Select the start tab and you will get a dropdown menu of programs that boot up with your PC. On the left side of the list is a box with the name of the program to the right that is booting with your machine. As you scroll down, everything that has a checkmark in the box at the left is booting when you boot the PC. Simply "uncheck" what you don't want to boot. Things like Internet explorer, Systray, you want to boot when you start. Anything you see that doesn' appear to be anything YOU loaded, uncheck.

If you're unsure, just uncheck one or two. After you make these changes Win98 tells you computer must restart to effect changes, select yes. The PC will reboot without the programs you disabled in the startup tab of the RUN folder.

If something goes amok....you can always select run, type in msconfig again and edit your changes.

This should solve your problem

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been trying to get rid of this toejam for months. The link in that thread takes you to a site with instructions on how to turn off messenger, but here is the meat of it...

1.Click on the Start button and open the control panel.

2.Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.

3.Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.

4.Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.

5.Change the startup type to Disable.

This is for XP, but I imagine that it would be similar for win2000.
