Sunday TOD - Pick your sides
« on: January 21, 2003, 04:39:07 PM »
Hi all,

Here is the next TOD it will start on Sunday the 2nd of Febuary.

Please post your squads side preferance.

==============================================
European Bomber War

The western front during world war II saw significant use of bombers for the first time. These planes were untested and due to early disasters were rapidly developed. This TOD recreates three separate aspects of the Bomber war over western Europe during early war, mid war and finally late war.

In order to recreate the feel of bomber operations during this period there will only be one or two targets per frame for each side. The timing and approach will be up to the respective sides CO. To ensure plenty of targets for the fighters we will be using formations as well as a roster to ensure everyone get a chance to fly fighters during the three frames.

Frame one is set during 41 recreating the early war. The Allies will be using the Boston MK III to represent the available bombers from that period and the Germans will be using the Ju-88A4.

Frame two will be mid war 1943. This frame will be set during a twilight time to recreate the RAF bomber command raids of that period.

Frame three is set late war and will feature the B26 and the B17G for the Allies, representing the USAAF, the Germans will be using a majority of late ware piston planes with limited jet and rocket planes mixed in. This frame will be daylight.

Allies.

If I may, I hope that frame 2 will either be a daylight frame (looking at the plane set), or a night frame with night fighters. Im not sure what P-51s and Spits are for in a RAF night raid.  Ju88s and 110s vs Mossies, Lancs and Bostons perhaps? RAF day fighters had no role at all in Bomber Commands missions, and including them goes against the "atmosphere" of it, imho.

Just a suggestion. Flog me as you will.

Why late war always have to be all uber LW stuff like TA152s, G10s, D9s, Me262s ...

My point is, why does it have to be an excuse to put all the super iron. Did they stoped throwing A5s, A8s, G2s, G6s, 110s at the Mighty Eight in 1944? They just scraped those and say "the heck with it, let's go with the brand new stuff".

I would enjoy more variety in TODs. Not just seing D9s, G10s, 262s zooming by my D30 canopy. (I'll keep a D11/D25 over a D30 for A2A).

I would also appreciate not having those huge furballs induced by the LW just circling ahead of the target because they know it already. I'd like a little bit more "mistery" in TOD, less "here comes 30 D9s Vs 20 ponies and 20 B17s" and 60% are dead into the first 10 minutes.

I would prefer more un-anounced smaller fights rather than a predicted big one.

Frame two, bring the night on only if you set icons to 1k, else it's worthless and day is better.
Dat jugs bro.

I would like to see the use of the P-40B (or Tomahawk MKIIA) these also saw use in 41 with the RAF.  Just an idea..

Have a question regarding TOD during Nieman.  I'm not sure about the rest of the guys, but our squad would probably prefer it be postponed during that time.  How are you planning on working it?

No. 272 Squadron will go either side for this one.

Gray: Your point is valid, however we do not have the numbers in TOD to allow us to use all types. Frame 1 is kind of neutral, Frame 2 the Allies have the better planes and frame 3 the Axis will have limited numbers of the best planes. If this TOD was based solely in 45 then I would restrict the uber rides even more and put in other planes. Also I am sure some people are dying to try a 163 :)

I would enjoy more variety in TODs. Not just seing D9s, G10s, 262s zooming by my D30 canopy. (I'll keep a D11/D25 over a D30 for A2A).

Gray: Everyone has a favorite ride, but to put in every model usually results in someone being unhappy. I will bear in mind your preferance and try and include them in my next TOD.

Gray: The alternative is that squads may never see any action. I can assure you that when squads have very occationally not seen action there is a very big deal made of it, imagine this every week!

I would prefer more un-anounced smaller fights rather than a predicted big one.

Gray: So would I, if you an come up with system that allows this and also makes sure everyone sees some action I will be very happy to implement it.

Frame two, bring the night on only if you set icons to 1k, else it's worthless and day is better.

Gray: It will be darker than usuall, but as we have no radar and as such no night figheters the best we can do is to approximate it. Remeber icons in a dak situation do replace tail radar etc.

Well, I guess I'll repeat my question.  What will be the status of TOD during the Nieman scenario?

I'm still checking with my squaddies,  but apart for the first frame, it looks like 101"RED" Sqn, Israel will be focusing on the Neimen scenario during its course, and standing down from tod during the latter two frames.

Maintaining an acceptable attendance on both  Saturday (neimen) and Sunday (tod) may prove a bit too difficult imo.

WOD will try to make it, we may have lower/unpredictable numbers due to Niemen. Put us where you need us.

Gray, why do you insist we have no night fighters when we have the 110G and the Mosquito, both of which were used as night fighters, with and without radar. For escort and as interceptors.

This is the 2nd TOD night design where we are using Spitfires vs LW day fighters, could we give something else a try some time? I mean, we have already done it.

Btw the BostonIII makes an excellent RAF night fighter too, because it has forward guns, and was used as a night fighter untill 1942.

I would really like to see a night RAF mission with the right types, so far I have seen it done once in a Snapshot in the last 9 months? One time, vs the countless 8th AF events that are done.

Sorry, I just feel strongly about it, not meaning to sound disrespectfull.

I did a poll of my guys and it seems that we will be able to have 4-6 pilots participating.  RAF please.
