Did you read the part about not allowing in car radios either? Thats a mistake... can you imagine a wreck at a tight circut like Monaco? 10 cars would be caught up in it without a location warning from the pits... are they trying to bring a touch of NASCAR into F1? Please...

OTOH, the outlawing of ABS and TCS is a big plus.

I would consider car radios to be a key piece of safety equipment, not to mention key to strategy and execution. I think F1 just took a step back to the '70s. Next thing ya know, they'll be wearing open-faced gold helmets.

I like the idea of eliminating the telemetry, but the radio is a necessary piece of safety equipment. The traction and launch control removal is a good idea, so is the longer-life engine and components.

Good luck to FIA when enforcing the prohibition of "expensive exotic components". I suspect that item will be revised between now and its introduction.

Radio coms stay.

LONDON, Jan 21 (AFP) - Radical changes to cars in this year's Formula One
championship have been modified following meetings by FIA officials with team
technical directors, motorsport's governing body said in a statement on
Tuesday.
The FIA, who still have to make a final, binding decision, confirmed pit to
car telemetry would be banned with immediate effect.
Other driver aids such as the use of traction control, launch control as
well as fully automatic gearboxes would be banned from the 2003 British Grand
Prix onwards, and not from 2004 as originally stated.
Last week, it was announced teams would be limited to just two cars with no
facility for a spare.
However a third car could be used if a vehicle was damaged beyond repair
according to the statement.
Radio communication between team and driver would still be allowed,
contrary to last week's announcement, provided it was a stand-alone system
which did not transmit other data, would be accessible to FIA and broadcasters
and perhaps even to the paying public.

Yeah there keeping communication with the driver just not allowing teams to control systems on the car via the pit. Basically its a vast improvement, havin traction control and lauch control really took out the skill of the driver and the excitment. Plus it will cut costs having these so teams like sauber and minardi will be able to survive.

I cant wait to new season starts:D

F1 has always been about pushing the technology envelope. I think there's a very tough balancing act to be performed by the FIA to retain interest in F1 both as a showcase for automotive technology and as a highly competitive racing series. The two may turn out to be mutually exclusive.

What if the deep pocketed Mercedes, Ferrari, BMW, and Renault were the only companies able to field teams? Would an intense technological battle between just eight cars with elite drivers truely be the worst outcome?

There are plenty of other series where technology is not a determining factor, why create another one?

Didnt see the relase regarding the inclusion of car/team radios - Im glad to see they are allowing it... I agree with almost everyone that no radio communication would be a serious hazard.

PS: There is talk that Porsche will be making a run at F1 within the next five years. (Guess the Cayanne engine might have a purpose afterall...)
