Hello, I just got a Playstation 2 for my kid. The cooling fan on this thing seams to be pretty loud. Is this normal?

Listen to one of those XBox controllers after about a year... that vibrating thangy is louder than the fans on a PS2.

You should see how many claims come in from Microsoft regarding loss as a result of Xbox caused fires.  :eek:

The decision to go with the PS2 was made by who offered the most games that would appeal to an 8 year old.  They seemed to have the most available.

Kingdom Hearts is very good  It's made by Squaresoft(Final Fantasy addiction) and Disney  an Uber Game it's  good enough for an 8 year old to play and yet it's  well made to keep an adult interested in the story I love that game .


ooh my  PS2 has some nice Games coming along

Devil May Cry 2 (This week)
Final Fantasy XI online
Final Fantasy X-2
and much more I can't remember :D

Your choice of ps2 over xbox based on game availability is correct
and yes the fan is loud it will quiet with time

ps2 can play ps1 game which iirc ='s 700+ games made for u.s market 1100+ games made for european ,asian market
you will need a mod chip to play the non u.s. games

also ps2 titles now range around 400 for u.s. versions

one word of advice unless your fully prepared to take on all maintenance and repair your self do not add a mod chip even a solderless one

currently sony repairs all ps2 optical/laser problems for free
because of a flaw in the laser alignment system
which ill cause your ps2 to stop playing or play intermittently after about 2000 hours of use

I just had mine repaired too much smoking of the ganja and ciggarettes gummed up my laser assembly
