Need help with choosing wireless router for the home
« on: January 27, 2003, 08:36:04 PM »
I'm going to start sharing my cable connection with my roommate. I don't want to run cat5 down the hallway so I was thinking of going wireless. I'm hoping you guys can help me out on choosing which brand/model router (at least 2 port) to go with. And will going wireless effect my online gaming in anyway that I will actually notice? Thanks..

Hey Sun,

Last month I set up a wireless Linksys system for my wife's computer and my XBox. It was easy to setup and I've had no probs so far. I picked up the BEFW11S4
4-port wireless router, a Linksys wirelss PCI card and a  WET11
wireless bridge for my XBox. My wife didn't want me to run a cable to the Xbox so this worked out to be a great solution.

As for playability, I notice no difference between direct conneciton or wireless. I played AH and Raven Shield demo on her system and it felt the same as mine. Always a steady connection under the AH Connection display.  One thing to do is make sure you look into the wireless security settings while you're setting it up. The Linksys documentation does a good job on walking you through it. Let me know if you have a questions.

I wouldn't reckommend getting wireless for any purpose.

Had very bad experiences with Wlan, very bad experiences with wireless mouses, very bad experiences with wireless keyboards etc. The list goes on.. They always seem to crap out on ya when you least want it.

If you're lucky it will work so-so (limited bandwith in any case.)

If you're unlucky you're stuck with a connection that lags, cuts off the works. Whatever you do, don't buy D-link. :)
