Help with Wiring!
« on: January 27, 2003, 08:46:06 PM »
Ok, here is a wiring puzzle I need a little help with.

Here is what I have:

1. TV
- Video 1: Video in/audio in
- Video 2: Comopnent Video IN/audio in
- Video out/audio out
- Svideo IN

2. DVD/Receiver (surround sound)
- Component Video out
- S-video out
- regular video out
- Aux 1/Aux 2 video in/audio in

3. DirecTV Satellite
- Svideo out
- video out/audio out

4. Xbox
- Video/Audio out

Here is what I want to do:

I want to maximize my capabilities with wiring (component video, svideo, etc). I also would like to run as much as I can through my receiver.

So, this is what I am thinking, will it work?

1. Component Video from DVD/Receiver - TV
2. Monster S-video from Satellite - TV
3. Monster RCA audio from DVD/Receiver(Aux1) - Satellite
4. Xbox audio/video into Receiver (Aux2).

If not, what am I missing? Is there a better way?

Thanks!!

Nim

That's how I'd do it with that system.

In the future, I recomend having a separate DvD and receiver.  Its more for a matter of convenience if one goes out than anything else.  Hopefully.. that won't matter for you because everything would be peach keen.

And remember... lawyers don't let lawyers wire sound systems.

BTW.. you don't have fiber-optic sound capability from Satellite to Receiver?

the satellite receiver one up from the cheapie plan has the recorder and digital audio out - checked on it for my father in law. it would cost him a $100 to upgrade so of course he isn't

the rest of your wiring is correct - except you may have to have to have your surround sound on all the time to get audio - which isn't a big deal for some

Well fellas - it didnt work. I can get everything to run fine, but no xbox...just sound. If I remove the S-video from the TV (that is coming in from the Satellite), it works. Otherwise, its just sound.

Is your s-video tied to aux 2?  Maybe switch the x-box to aux-1 and the audio in to aux-2.  If that doesn't work then you might try taking the s-video straight to the tv.

Nimitz, send the whole deal to me.

I'll solve it all and then eventually return it to you.

what mini d said

you've plugged the composite video into a video input which is sharing with the s-video in. move the xbox input over to another composite (rca) input along with its audio and it should work

if you give model numbers of tv & sound sys - can look up specs on crutchfield.com and see exactly your options

Hiyas fellas,

Thanks for input (Santa, I'll pass). :)

1. I looked on crutchfield, and oddly enough they do not have my TV (or any Toshiba TVs) nor do they have my samsung receiver/dvd.

2. My receiver/dvd I think is the problem (or so my friend has said). It was only $250, and as such does not have many capabilities, specifically no S-Video IN or Component Video IN.

3. Was the S-Video tied to my Aux 2? I dont know - my xbox was. I had video/audio for xbox plugged into Aux 2 on receiver. The S-video ran out from reciver -> TV (but I dont think it was Aux 2.

4. I cannot move the xbox anywhere else that I can think of and keep the surround sound. There are only 2 video sources on receiver, aux1 and aux2 (in addition to Svideo OUT and Component Video OUT).

What we've done to make it work is:

1. Run component video out from recvr to tv (good for DVDs only).
2. Run xbox in aux2 on recvr
3. Run Composite video out from recv in to TV
4. Run compositive audio/video from recvr to satellite.

I am getting only monster Video 2Compositive quality with satellite - but I cannot think of any other options.

I would get the satellite on S-video (direct from sat to tv bypassing the surround sound on the video part), spilt (Y) that audio so it goes to the surround and tv at same time(that way you don't need the surround sound on just to watch tv) - even if it meant discoing the Xbox until you play it

S-video quality is a step up from composite
