I'm a n00b at the CD burning stuff, but my parents just got a new computer and asked me to show them how to burn CDs.

One issue in particular has me puzzled- My father owns a bazillion country music CDs- we have figured out how to copy the tracks to the hard drive (from the original) and from the HDD to the blank CD- but we can't copy just one track, then pick another track and do it, if we try that it says "please insert a blank CD".

I was under the impression that is was possibly to say record 1 track off 1 CD (to a blank CD) then take another CD and copy one track (to the formerly blank CD) without a problem? I thought you could keep writing to a blank CD until it was filled, but you could never overwrite the data unless you have a CDRW. But apparently with the windows stuff we got you can only write to each CD one time and one time only.

Anyway, I'd like to get some software that is A. easier to use, and B. smarter than this Windows stuff... if the damn program doesn't know there is still 550 Megs left on the CD to write to, I don't want to use it.

Try to not choose "close session" or something to that effect.

It writes the "end data" line at the end of your data track. This tells the CD to stop reading in the case of an audio CD so it knows the length of the CD and all of the relative information. If you choose to leave the session open (different terminology on different burner software) it may work.

Do you mean using the same cd in two differecnt recording sessions? You can do a simple copy/paste of the cd songs to your music folder. You then run your software to burn selecting those songs you want to record. You can copy paste the favorites from each original cd the the directory, run your software and then fill the blank CD to the max. I believe that some programs only allow one session per non-rewritable CD by putting a closing/locking file on that CD. CD-rewritables allow you to overwrite or add to the CD by any program.

Nah, we've been using the Windows Media Player stuff. It has the option for 'copy to CD' and 'copy from CD', etc. Doesn't have any option for 'closing a session' or anything like that.

Thats what I'm looking for.. either something either shareware or freeware to burn CDs with.. something that is a little better than this clunky Windows stuff.

If you dad got a cd burner, he should have gotten a lite version of a burner. Nero, or EZCDCreator? Some converters, changeing say wav. to mp3, have a built in burner. Google for CD Burning and see what you find, but go thru your dads CD that came with

the 'creative playcenter' (comes with SB audigy) is the best I've used.

you can 'rip' your music from your cd's to mp3 on your hard drive. retreves all the info about your cd from the net, and will name, save, and sort your music for you. then you can make regular cd's, mp3 cd's, or just play them from the hard drive.

right now I have about 300-400 cd's on my harddrive (about 20 albums per gig)

cdex is the best mp3 ripper I've used.

Also have a tool for reversing mp3 to normal cd format.

Other than that Nero Burning Rom (heheh, who says geeks haven't got any humour?) is the best. Easy to use, and will allow you to keep the session open.
